One week to go: deadline for mandatory prepaid SIM card registration!

BANGKOK: You may remember that we previously posted news regarding the mandatory SIM card registration that is being enforced in Thailand.

Here’s a gentle reminder if one were needed that you have until next Friday the 31st of July to register your prepaid mobile phone number with your operator.

If you don’t, you’ll be unable to make calls or use data after that date, though it seems that you will still be able to receive text messages.

Also note that one of our staff writers, Jonathan, registered his DTAC SIM card earlier this year in Market Village Hua Hin, but recently received an SMS (in Thai) with a reminder to register. So, be warned that even if you think you have registered, there is a slim chance that something went wrong and you’ll have to do it again! Oh dear…

How to register your SIM card in Thailand

If you’re not Thai, just take your passport to either 7-11, Tesco Lotus or Big C, or your local NBTC (Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission) if there is one near you (Bangkok and Phuket have one apparently). Thai citizens just need to show their ID card.

You can also just pop along to your network company’s local shop, which is probably the simplest approach as they should be able to process it quickly without somebody queueing up behind you to buy cigarettes…

You can dial *151# to find out if your SIM is registered.

Alternatively, if you have any questions about the whole registration process, call your network operator directly or go and speak to staff at the store of your network operator.

Here are the details for the main ones in Thailand:

AIS: call 1175 in Thailand or +66 2299 5000 from abroad.

DTAC: call 1678 (press 7 for English) in Thailand or +66 2202 8000 from abroad.

True: call 1331 in Thailand or +66 89100 1331 from abroad.

I just tried *151# for AIS. It sends a SMS; You've already registered your prepaid SIM for this number with IDCard/Passport No.neding with....

I guess, instead of 'No.ending' it should state the last 4 digits of my passport number. I hope it's ok anyways.

AIS appears to reply in English when the card is not yet registered. I'll do mine tomorrow and report again

The numbers are given in the OP for you to contact your provider and they will advise you (hopefully).

The providers service numbers generally work from anywhere in the world you are connected - I have used both Dtac and AIS service numbers at no cost from Europe several times over the past couple of years.

If you are living here on a long stay visa (retirement, educational. work permit etc) then best to simply change to a more practical post paid account system. Bit of messing around to start with needing the correct documents to sign up for such an account with your favourite supplier but well wroth it in the long run. I have a True account which I find ideal for my iPhone package and works out cheaper I think than prepaid cards anyway and no hassle with ever having to top up and all that crap. And of course no need to register as you already will be of course.

Oh and yes I have had my True account for about 6 years now so never need change my phone number which is another big benefit too.

I am out of the country, arriving back on 1st Aug and need my mobile to call family on arrival. Have the government thought of this, or is it the usual Thai "good idea" followed by consequences later ! facepalm.gifwink.png

Out local Soi Bum (7-11 Doorman) will regester your SIM for 100 baht. Quite the Enterpeneur.

I would guest he now has 75-100 numbers in his name and doing a brisk busness that is getting better every day.

...............now no one will ever know

Call the customer service of your provider to ask for instructions. I called DTAC just now (+66 2 202 8100) about my prepaid SIM and got information about how to make an online appointment for a video call for the SIM registration.

For DTAC prepaid:

  1. Go to https://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/service/sim-registration.html
  2. Click on the button post-21260-0-67106800-1437747720_thumb.p (This service is available from 09:00 to 18:00 hours Thai time (UTC+7)

This means I have to wait until tomorrow to make the appointment for the video call.

I went to the True office inside Central mall in BANGKOK and they REFUSED to register it. Told me I would have to go to the NEAREST POLICE STATION.

Whaaaaat? Another ignorant big city Thai, 555? Anyone who thinks Bangkok has more educated people should talk to this woman.

My girlfriend ended up registering it in her name.

What a cockup....

I used my Thai driving license to register, not my passport.

That's good, it has your passport number on it. No pompem.

Every time I'm asked for my passport here I give them my Thai license. It throws them off but they accept it.

I see an extension of the deadline coming soon. Do you think that they will really cut off 40-50 million phones on August 1st?

If they do, it will make a big mess.

I think it will not get a mess, it will clean up.

Like clean up disk space on your computer. Good action though.

If it was a counter operative, simply ask for the manager.

Works every time.
