DLT warns pickup truck owners not to add any extension to the vehicle

BANGKOK, 27 July 2015 (NNT)-The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has said it is illegal to install a metal structure on top of the pickup truck in an attempt to carry more items as it would pose danger to other vehicles on the road.

DLT Deputy Director General Suchart Klinsuwan said it would be illegal to attach any protruding equipment to pickup truck.

According to him, many pickup truck owners have installed a basket like structure as an extension to the existing roof, which is attached to the truck’s rear section, for commercial purposes.

Quite often the extension is mounted separately to the vehicle, which could pose danger when used to carry large and heavy items. Without a proper structural support underneath the extension, it could easily break and come off while the vehicle is traveling on the road.

The Deputy Director General said any modification to the truck should be in line with the regulations in order to assure road safety.

So how are the Hill tribes going to get their produce to market,

as they all have cage like structures, and rear springs that look

like they are off a ten tonne truck,

regards Worgeordie

And what will happen if say, a Crim in Brown finds a modified truck?

That's a rhetorical question by the way.

Is this what they mean? Lots of similar extended pickups, usually carrying produce or recyclable materials.

what could go wrong? you just take the turns a little slower. blink.png

We only make one trip, saves money on fuel and time.

what they talking about, its the land of extended pickup trucks w00t.gif

Should that not read Hub of extended pickup trucks ?

I'll bet every truck owner will state "it's their RIGHT" to modify their truck. Like it's their RIGHT to drive anyway they wish b/c they are Thai and Thailand is for Thais.

So the cost to transport food is about to triple. Inflation here we go.

If they actually think the BIB are going to enforce this law then the BIB won't be doing anything else for the next several years.

And for his next joke he is going to point out it is also illegal to add 'extensions' to motorbikes as well.

"it would be illegal to attach any protruding equipment to pickup truck." Another example of well thought out edicts. Guess they will have to pull every baht bus off the road due to those platforms on the back. I am surprised never seen one break off even after some rather fat farangs have hopped on for the ride.

Let's just hope Operation Yewtree doesn't affect this Thai DLT as it has with his British counterpart.

There are obviously many overloaded pickups on the road with a variety of produce etc being transported. Why are the LT authorities prioritising this above the more dangerous practice of carrying humans (up to 15) on the back of a pickup with no means of safety restraint in the event of an accident (sorry brake failure)?

That's great. Only half the pickups on the road use this system. The creative and distraction lighting on vehicles bothers me a lot more.

Is it ok if this bloke fits an extension to his bike cart as they just dropped another two boxes for him ?

We all know the laws are only there to provide the officers with enough options to generate tea money. I can't imagine we will see citations handed out to half of the pickup trucks in Thailand. But we might have to wait a few minutes longer at the roadblocks now.

Next we will see a charge for attaching a Michelin man to the outside of a 10 wheel truck.
