Cancelling WP, staying as tourist?

Featured Replies

Apologies if this is a repeat, having trouble finding sufficient information.

I currently have an extension of stay from immigration.

My first question is: Can my employer cancel my WP for me, without me? If so, does this get electronically entered so border guards will just "know" when I exit, or do I need to be carrying a letter or some other proof with me? Ultimately, do I tell the border I've finished, or does the border already know?

Secondly and more importantly:

I would like to remain in Thailand approximately 2, maybe 3 weeks after my work contract is completed. I won't have time to do a border run.

There is a retreat that I'd like to do that has very stringent deadlines, which begins less than 48 hours after the last day of my contract. On the other side of the country from me. Flying is costly, so I will need to be spending much of that time doing land-crossings to arrive to the retreat on time.

Can I do a border run the week before?

So far from what I can tell my options are:

A) cancel WP and get a 7 day extension, pay for any remaining days and hope I don't get picked up in the meantime
b ) MAKE a border run happen (can I turn straight around and come back into the country, literally within minutes?) and spend more precious time and money doing this (but even so only gaining 15 days)
C) Fly out and fly back in (I can't afford this)
D) ????????

Any suggestions or insight into how this process works would be so very appreciated

If you really are considering a two week overstay remember the fine will amount to 7000 Bht. (500Bht/day)

What is your Nationality ?

If you carry a passport issued by a G7 country then a thirty day visa exempt entry will be provided at a land border.

Yeah, trying to avoid that option....

Can someone confirm the number of days given for a land entry for an American. Is it 15 or 30 days?

I am American. Does that qualify for a 30 day land crossing? I can't tell if that' still valid or not.

If you are American carrying a valid American passport then a 30 day visa exempt entry will be possible.

Your employer can cancel your work permit. There is no link between the Labor Ministry and immigration that would cancel your extensions.

Whether you need a letter a the border depends upon the crossing you go to. Only 2 on the Lao border have been reported as wanting one.

B. Is the best option. If you are from a G7 country you will get a 30 day entry other wise you will get 15 days. You could extend your entry for 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht. if you need more time.

THANK YOU! I guess lastly, is it ok to exit and re-enter within minutes/hours at a land crossing?

If you have a VISA (tourist, non-imm, elite, etc), yes.

If you are using a visa exempt entry could potentially vary among some borders. Sadao/Dannok border crossings there were reports of people needing to spend the night in Malaysia. Not sure if that is still true.

How many visa exempt entries have you had in the last 12 months?

Always wondered about the logic of only G7 countries being allowed 30 days. Sucks that they don't think Aussies deserve 30 days as well sad.png On the other hand a country financially in the poo now "Italy" is in the G7 & gets 30 days facepalm.gif

In my case work permit was cancelled and still had about 5 months on my extension I think. I googled around, spoke to lawyers and both hr department from old and new jobs. Everyone was giving different information so I just forgot about it.

Just before the extension was up I did a visa run to Penang for a tourist visa. Not a problem. No questions asked.

This from immigration website.

Attention

If the alien granting extension of stay permit in The Kingdom for the reason of working at a business company/organization etc., resigns from such company / organization, his/her stay permit will be immediately terminated. As a consequence, The stay permit of his/her dependents will be terminated as well. Work Permit and Stay Permit must be revoked by competent officials.

Also this from a form that you should of had to sign when you got your extension. acknow_con2stay.pdf
