“The growth was projected at 2 percent earlier this year.”

Not by anyone in Prayut’s Cabinet but collapsing exports were anticipated mostly by everyone else outside the Cabinet!

The Center for International Trade Studies of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce said the Thai export sector could grow 3.1% this year.” 2015-01-14

MR Pridiyathorn Devakula deputy prime minister in charge of the economy: “exports had stabilised and the government had already factored the uncertainty surrounding the global economic recovery into its economic forecast. 2015-01-15

The Department of International Trade Promotion Director-General Nuntawan Sakuntanaga:“the Ministry of Commerce will work in unison with the private sector to push the nation’s export figures this year to grow by a target of 4 percent” 2015-01-20

“Ministry of Commerce predicted Thai export would grow 4 per cent this year.” 2015-01-28

“The Fiscal Policy Office has made adjustments to the country’s economic growth projections for 2015 down to just 3.9% while forecasting export growth at only 1.4%.”
2015-01-30

“The Thai National Shippers Council (TNSC) has lowered its projection of the country’s export growth in 2015 to only 1.5 per cent” 2015-01-31

The Joint Private Standing Committee comprising the Board of Trade of Thailand, the Federation of Thai Industries, and the Thai Bankers Association: “The joint standing committee, meanwhile, has maintained its economic-growth projection for 2015 at 3.5 per cent, as it expects stronger economic expansion and more budget disbursement in the second half….However, it has revised down its export-growth forecast from 3.5 per cent to just 2 per cent-2.5 per cent,” 2015-03-04

This Junta has more spin cycles than a washing machine when it comes to predicting the economy. But it doesn’t have the detergent to deliver a healthy economy.

The global economy, is it?

Why has Vietnam had export growth of 10% year to date then? Would it have anything to do with removing the 49% cap that foreigners may own in businesses? Would it have to do with business friendly policies? Link

Current turmoil amidst the global situation has definately hadan effect.

But over extension into Thailands neighbours may prove a short lived advantage.

There are events to come globally which will leave Thailand in local advantage. But quite possibly to the disadvantage of farang expectations.
