British man hacked at in city park

Featured Replies

A British national was the victim of an apparently random axe attack in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district late on Wednesday night, leaving him with a head wound that required treatment at hospital.

Phillip Shcimmin, 26, was reportedly walking with friends in the park in front of Wat Botum pagoda, when a man ran up and hit him in the head with the weapon.

Police said the suspect, identified as Dem Ngour, 21, did not know Shcimmin and was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he launched the unprovoked attack.

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

May the injured man make a speedy recovery and the perpetrator meet Khun Justice.

Let's hope so, but Khun Justice (or, in Khmer, Lok Justice) is an even more elusive character in Cambodia than in Thailand.

This attack should be viewed as a random act of kindness...Cambodians are still trying to figure out how to treat foreigners as well as other Cambodians in the post Pol Pot era...lots of anger, booze, and drugs to help them recover...

So was the guy remanded and charged, or just let go, as they do

let go of course

Unfortunate, wrong place wrong time, get better soon..

Wrong place? There is NO right place these days.

Wat botum pagoda or Wat Bottom park according to Google maps is a very centrally located park, the site of the Vietnam-Cambodia monument and very close to the Royal Palace. I have stayed opposite that park numerous times and the thought that some crazed axe murderer would harm someone, especially a foreign tourist who wasn't even walking alone but with friends, is deeply disturbing.

The article does not however mention the time of day the attack happened.
