Somyot says Thaksin’s police rank case is still underway

BANGKOK: -- Royal Thai Police commissioner Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmoung assured today that the proposed stripping of the former premier Thasksin Shinawatra's police rank is still underway but needs cautious scrutinisation.

He said the proposal is now with the Council of State to scrutinise on two to three legal issues.

Pol Gen Somyot’s comment came after the prime minister redesignated the Justice Minister to chase progress in the case which remained slow.

Justice Minister Gen Paiboon Khumchaya later insisted that the police gave a clearer answer of just “yes” or “no” to strip Thaksin of his police lieutenant colonel rank so that he could answer the public on the issue which has been delayed.

Pol Gen Somyot said he personally clarified the prime minister this morning about the delay, saying he has forwarded the matter to the Council of State to scrutinise two to three legal issues so that any decision reached would not be disputed or contended in the future.

He admitted that the matter had to be taken in cautious step to avoid legal disputes while dismissing criticism that he neglected to pursue the case.

He also said it was not a matter of losing face after being chased of the case by the Justice Minister.

He said the case is still in process.

One would expect that the highest ranking law enforcement official in the country could be a little more precise with the quantity of "legal issues"?

The end of September, and his pending retirement, can't come soon enough for Somyot.

This situation is the poster child for mountains out of mole hills.

Where's the drama in stripping someone of his rank, after all he's a fugitive from Thai justice, yet they're playing pass the parcel ?

Does wonders for confidence in this govt's ability to get things done. rolleyes.gif

Ok the govt has received an update. Now move on to more pressing issues.

For a leader to previously imply he as sick of Mr T being mentioned he sure is doing his best to keep his name up in lights.

think they are afraid in case he ever comes back

That's what a lot of people think, but it's not the "real" reason officials don't want to deal with this issue.

As with so many things here, the "real" reason can't be discussed.

Prayut orders Justice Ministry to find way to strip Thaksin of police rank
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Monday that he has instructed the Justice Ministry to study legal channels for stripping former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra of his police rank.

The Royal Thai Police has been earlier asked to consider removing the police rank from Thaksin after he had given interviews to foreign media, affecting a high institution of the country.

Prayut said the police's action against Thaksin has not progressed because the police's rules for stripping an officer of his rank would be applied to active police officers.

As a result, Prayut said, he told the Justice Ministry to consider what actions could be made.

In other words, DO IT OR ELSE! Strip him of his passports, strip him of his police rank, and while you're at it, strip him of his citizenship so he's no longer a Thai. You can strip him of everything "strip-able", but the Boogy Man ain't going away. And, let's face it, in the world outside of Tiny Thailand, Thaksin has more friends, and more clout, than General P and all his friends combined.

What total nonsense this is: having highly paid bureaucrats sitting around debating whether to take his rank away is stupid, idiotic, moronic....and worse it has been going on for months. The economy is falling into the abyss while these dolts twiddle their thumbs with really important issues like Thaksin's police rank. He hasn't been in the country for 8 uears so what does it matter? Never have I seen such moronic behaviour.

"He also said it was not a matter of losing face after being chased of the case by the Justice Minister."

No, it's a matter of the Justice Minister keeping his Cabinet position which means keeping PM Prayut happy.

Just personal vendetta, nothing serious like national security.

One wonders if these appointments are not elitist , how many Police officers do Expats here know back home who have left their Job and carried the titles with them , it would seem that the RPT lives in the past, anybody leaving any occupation unless decorated or ex leader or has a title ( Like Professor ) , doesn't take the previous work status with them if changing into another area, at the moment Khun Thaksin should be referred to as former Prime Minister or Prime Minister and that is exactly what he was like it or lump it , eat yer heart out.coffee1.gif

Off all the problems Thailand is facing do the Junta really see this token scalp as really that important?

It should of been done long ago, and it really shouldn't be this big of an issue. Quite pathetic really.

It seems somewhat ludicrous.

Either the law says a convicted criminal cannot hold a police rank or it doesn't. That's not the issue, although you're right it should have been answered and action taken when the conviction happened, if that is the law.

The issue now is it appears the CoP is reluctant to make a decision, and then take action or not take action and announce why. He wants to get out this month and leave it for someone else to do. Typical Thai thinking. He doesn't want to be accountable or responsible, nor is he willing to piss Thaksin off as he might get back in power, even through another proxy, and is known as a vindictive bar steward.

To farangs it's simple. What's the law say, there's the answer, follow it. To Thais, have you noticed how complex even the simplest of things can become. All because know one wants to make the decision on something, which makes them accountable and responsible, and might incur some adverse consequences sometime in the future,

This is a great example of why nothing gets changed.

You are correct : it should not be such big an issue and it really is pathetic.

It's the tomato policeman scared of Thaksin's displeasure which is the problem - not the Junta's.

It seems it is a little too complicated for you to see that.

Why is the general ordering anything? Ih he wants the title stripped then he can do it. Separation of powers does not exist.

Dont blame anyone else general, do it yourself if it means that much to you.
