lost passport in mongolia bit of an akward one

Featured Replies

me and my partner are currently in china on our way to thailand, we are both uk citizens and got a 2 x 60 day tourist visa for thailand, my partner lost her passport in mongolia which had visa for thailand and china, she is now travelling on a emergency travel document issued by the uk consulate in mongolia, she managed to get another visa for china however we went to beijing for a thailand visa but was told we have to apply in the uk.

we enter thailand on the 23 august and the emergency travel document finishes 6 months after, the emergency document is only valid for entering thailand no other country after that

the british consulate said we have to apply in thailand for another passport (we are planning to stay in thailand for maybe a year)

Dilema is she will end up getting a 30 day tourist visa at the border ( we fly in )

when she gets her new passport it will have no visa at all anybody any idea how we can get back on track with visas it would be better if both our visas matched for border runs etc thanks for any answers they would be most appreciated

PS the british consulate and embassys in uk and mongolia were a complete waste of time i am disgusted by their lack of any kind of information all we got was some moron on the telephone saying you can apply for a new passport online but you cannot from china

Fact is other than suppling emergency passports as they gave your GF, British consulates and Embassies have nothing to do with normal passport issue and renewal anymore so they are in the dark as well over new pp's

Further if you want the existing visa re issued and it was issued in the UK one suspects the info they gave you about going back the UK to do it is correct and maybe this is what they meant

If you intend getting the new PP in Thailand i would strongly suggest you read about the process in Thailand at trendy towers in BKK and assume she had het police report and all relevant docs from the consulate in Mongolia

She can extend the 30 day entry she get on entry for 30 days at an immigration office.

The emergency travel document can be used to apply for the extension after she applies for a passport.

After she gets her new passport you could go to Vientiane or Savannakhet Laos to get 2 entry tourist visas.

I'm surprised that you found a British embassy or consulate in the UK, where was it located?

Where you disgusted enough to refuse to take the emergency travel document that they issued to your passport-losing partner by which you were able to continue your travels?

The Thai embassy and consulates in China will only issue a visa to those that are legal residents in China. That is why that would not issue a visa.

No Thai embassy or consulate will replace a visa lost with a passport.

PS. Their is neither a British consulate or a British embassy in the UK

Moral of the story always look after your passport.

I keep mine between my arse cheeks these days.

But thats nothing to do with security thats just get one back on all those immigration people over the years, your making them handle an arse sweat infused passport without gloves

You can apply for a replacement passport in Thailand only if you are resident here and can prove it. You will need something addressed to you or with your name on it in Thailand, issued within the last year.

What this means is that as a priority you need to arrange something official with your name on it issued in Thailand or sent to Thailand as soon as you get here. I write this to put you on notice so you waste no time. There are many posts in this forum concerning acceptable proof of residence for UK citizens.

In addition, as a previous poster mentioned, you will need the police report stating you lost the passport.

The police report will not be needed because she has already reported the lost passport and obtained a ETD.

I strongly suggest in this instance the OP has some form of police report to submit along with the rest of the documenation when applying a the new full passport as a replacement for the one that was lost

Just because an ETD was issued in Mongolia this doesnt have any bearing on the application for a new full 10 British passport as the issue of the passport has nothing to do with an BE embassy or consulate, its the passport office in the UK which issues the new passport and they will want to do their own due dilligence as to the circumstances of how the passport got lost

Apologies - you will need the date you reported the loss, the name of the police station you reported the loss to and the police report number to complete the LS01 form that must accompany your application form.

Annoying as your experience was, and lousy as the consular services provided by the UK to its nationals is, it is worth noting that some years ago your experience would have been even worse. There was a time when the UK would only issue emergency passports for travel back to the UK.

The police report ti needed to submit the LS01 form which has already been done when she got the ETD.

See: https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports/y/thailand/replacing/adult

An LS01 must be submitted when applying for a lost or stolen UK passport regardless of any other process. The LS01 is a requirement of Table E from:

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/342797/Supportingdocs3AUG2014.PDF

The LS01 requires some details from the police report. You don't have to send the actual police report itself.

Additional requirements for renewing lost or stolen UK passports are:

1) You can be asked to attend an interview at a British embassy

2) You must obtain a countersignature, which is not usually required for a standard renewal.

Obtaining the countersignature itself can be difficult in a country you have just arrived in.

From the webpage I posted a link to earlier.

"If you haven’t already reported the loss or theft, you must include form LS01with your passport application."

She had to comply with that in order to get the ETD.

To be honest if it was me considering this was in Mongolia and they will be apply in Thailand through an agency to the PP office in the UK

I would put a copy of police report in the application if availible cos all it takes is some clown in the UK to decide you need it and things get delayed

I do respect your knowledge and helpfulness, but on this occasion I have to differ. You don't have to submit an LS01 to get a UK emergency travel document. You have to fill in the application form, a sample of which is here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/432900/ETD_Application_Form.pdf

The LS01 is used when you apply for the renewal of your passport and is a requirement.

I can assure you that if you apply to renew a lost or stolen UK passport and you don't include an LS01 your passport will not be renewed. Instead you will be contacted and asked to provide the LS01.

I sent my scanned passport pages to my e-mail address. If something would happen, I could get the copies even in Mongolia, or at the British embassy in London.....lol

" Me and my partner, or My partner and I?" Selfishness never dies.

P.S. I prefer lost in Isaan though.

Form what I have found the LS01 would have been done before applying for the ETD. It is the first step for reporting a lost or stolen passport.

See this page specific for Mongolia to report a lost or stolen passport, Download the LS01 is the third line of of the page. https://www.gov.uk/report-a-lost-or-stolen-passport/y/abroad/mongolia

I apologise for my error. Genuinely, however, that's a very recent requirement. I note that all the lost and stolen passport pages for every country were updated 3 days ago!

Not "Krabi would only". Any immigration office in Thailand would correctly do the same. By the way currently you do not have a visa, you are visa exempt.

The British Embassy in Wireless Road currently does not, plus has not issued/taken orders for passports now for a number of years........

Correct, the British Embassy in Bangkok can still issue Emergency Passports if required (ETD - Emergency Travel Document), but these ETDs are issued immediately on application, if the applicant is eligible.

No Thai embassy or consulate will replace a visa lost with a passport.

Since when? I had a Non Imm O visa (double entry) issued in Shanghai.
