You have to learn to live with them, they have their good and bad points,

good they eat mosquitoes, bad they can get into electrical equipment, had

one fried in the controls of washing machine, but still like them around,in

fact I have one that lives on my computer desk, usually stays under keyboard,

I feed it little bits of food, really likes cake.

No matter how well you think you have the house sealed they are still going to

get in,if they want,if you need to keep them out your electrical equipment,I use

the following methods, get some Thai tobacco (like shag),put in in small cloth

bags and hang near your equipment, another thing that works is Moth balls

put them in bags same as tobacco, downside they smell a bit,as I have already said,

try and live with them, they could save you from a nasty case of Dengue fever.

regards Worgeordie PS most local markets will sell the tobacco

Cake ? Surely you jest ? They only want live food.

in the Mall they sell traps to catch them and sprays to deter them

I'm not really clear if OP was talking about geckos or the little jin joks....and various posters seem to be talking about both.

The trap above must be for geckos as jin joks are way too small.

What sort of bait does one use to catch geckos?

I have those humane traps but no idea what to put in them...and do need to at least reduce my gecko population, way too much gecko droppings.

Often a cat will cull them for you. But then you have a cat!

My cat grabs them, but makes him puke if he eats them. Only did it a couple of times then learnt the lesson.

The geckos tend to hide behind picture frames, wall hangings etc. I boiled up a couple of prik kee nuu in water, filtered it and sprayed it behind the hangings, good deterrent. Spray it on them as well and they vamoose quickly. But I do this only if they get out of hand. As pointed out by others they go after the mozzie population.

my wife mixed some herbs which lizards don't like. They'll move out within one day. Amazing

Excellent information....What's the recipe?

sabsua + noina leaves (maybe not correct writing, please ask your Thai partner) cut it fine, mix it. Place it at different areas of rooms.

If you have bugs get lizards

If you have lizards get snakes

If you have snakes get cats

If you have cats get dogs

or

If you have patience get used to it

You reminded me of this nursery rhyme.

I know an old lady who swallowed a fly,

I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a spider,

That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a bird,

How absurd to swallow a bird!

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a cat,

Imagine that, to swallow a cat!

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a dog,

My, what a hog, to swallow a dog!

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a goat,

Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!

She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a cow,

I wonder how she swallowed a cow?!

She swallowed the cow to catch the goat,

She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,

She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,

She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,

She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,

That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,

She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

I don't know why she swallowed the fly,

I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a horse,

She's dead, of course!!

Not too bothered about the rooms, cats take care of that but it is probably good insurance to put it inside electronics enclosures. How often does your wife need to replace the concoction?

More accurately known as geckos. Gecko is also the web search engine used in Mozilla Firefox. I feel better now I've contributed some useless knowledge.

If the OP has too many geckos, it's because they have too much insect food. Reduce the insect population, and the geckos will fall in population accordingly.

Nothing you can do about this but to keep the numbers down use anti-insect spray intensively and vacate the house for half a day. In extreme cases you can buy in specialist services but that may cost as much as 10,000 baht for the treatment.

These jingjogs will find the place less attractive once the food source has gone.

Sorry you are wrong that will eat, or at least inspect, any form of food. We bought the cockroach mats that form into a little cardboard house.

Put a peice of papaya in the middle of the glued area hoping for the cockroaches to come in,left it on the sink, next morning 2 jing joks trapped by their feet.

I was filled with guilt and still havent caught the cockroaches.Actully every night a new jing jok comes in and stays behind a picture frame waiting to catch an insect.

He's almost part of the family just need to toilet train him. Also find them occasionally fried in the toaster ,no live food there just breadcrumbs.

We have too many jingjoks. Geckos are too large to get in to a well sealed building.

Rat and Cockroach traps (the glue board kind) seem to work as whenever I put them out I end up with more lizards than anything else.

I've drastically cut down on the number of cockroaches in the house though by using that spray "expanding foam" to block the various holes in the ceiling (around where pipes and electrical wiring come through). Plus, installing those "one-way" drains in the bathroom and by the drain next to the laundry machine.

I still get some lizards though. Not much for them to live so eventually when I go to move some piece of furniture or something I'll find a dried up little corpse now and then.

I notice the holes in the wall where the air-con pipes go through - got to plug those as well. The only other entry point then would be the front door. If it fits snuggly and is kept closed at nights (when the little buggars are most active) it should keep most of them out.

Personally I don't worry about them too much. Keep food covered. Wipe counter-tops before preparing food. Look up once in awhile to make sure the coast (or ceiling) is clear before pouring a drink. Haven't had any electrical issues (yet). Too bad they weren't actually a little more aggressive when it comes to eating insects (and too bad they aren't more "domesticated" so you could pick them up and put them where they need to be and train them) !

I don't have any problems with the critters but could certainly use some "expanding foam" for other projects. Can you

tell me where you buy it here in Thailand and what it's called in Thai if not "expanding foam"? The info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, dap

at the beginning twice weekly for a month, then maybe every week. And yes, they don't like cold air-con. Good luck

Just to answer the OP's question: ask in shops selling fertilizer, pesticides etc. this might work. - In our small village there is at least two times a month some pick -up plus loudspeaker selling those poisonous things. - I prefer catching jing-jocks myself; not easy. And when I might be successful our white cat loves to play with them and of course, enjoys eating them. - Another theme: they are indeed eating a lot of insects, but I never saw them killing a mosquito. Never. - It's a myth!

I must admit--this is the first time I've heard anyone refer to their 'residence' in Chiang Mai--as a Cottage, rather quaint.

So, what's the difference between 'Jin-Joks' and Geckos? Or, by Geckos do you mean Tokay?

The stuff in HomePro is not a poison, I believe, just a 'deterrent' and, it doesn't work.

I have a large fish catch net--my daughter has a phobia about them and I 'have' to catch any that she encounters in the house--sometimes the chase lasts for ages.

As the previous posters stated, they're only there for the food - you must have enough insects and mosquitos inside to feed them. If there's less food, the stronger ones will start to chase out the smaller ones as they compete for fewer resources of food - your house will reach an ecological balance naturally. They are cold blooded, that's why they're going into your computer, for the warmth. Turn off your computer when not using it and at night put on a night light somewhere - the warmth will draw them there and away from your computer.

If you sleep on your back, just keep your mouth shut at night. biggrin.png

Not sure if this is posted twice. Apologies if it is.

I purchased electronic EZI brand mosquito and Rodent repellers from Home Pro for around 600baht each I think. Friends had one for years and claim no mosquito or gecko in their home. The bigger box type ones are apparently silent . These are effective in repelling mosquito and seem to keep the geckos outside. I do see one in occasionally so not 100 per cent but I do not sweep up gecko poo inside so seem to work

Any population of anything relies on a food supply. Reduce the amount of insects and you'll reduce your gecko population.

Although they will eat mosquitoes, they will never eat enough to dent that population... But they undoubtedly bhelp to control the insect population of a house.

I suspect most peoples worries about these useful animals are not born so much out of practical concerns but of and ingrained fear of all things reptilian.
