Thailand places hope on two more storms for more water

9-17-2015-8-18-18-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute is closely monitoring two storms which are now being formed in the South China Sea and in the Pacific Ocean whether they will bring more rains to replenish the half-empty four main dams or not.

The HAII reported that Thailand is now caught between two different phenomena – too much water in one place and too little water in the other at the same time. Areas with too much water are the eastern and southern regions and areas with too little water are the North, the upper central region and central and upper northeastern region.

The country’s four main dams are still short of water. Bhumibol dam has only 646.21 million cubic metres of usable water or 6.69% of its capacity and Sirikit dam has 1,313.97 million cubic metres of usable water or 19.73%. In addition to the water stored at Khun Darn Prakarnchon and Pasak Chonlasit dams, the four dams have altogether 2,298 cubic metres of usable water which are still 1,202 million cubic metres short to meet the demand for consumption for next year.

Depression Vamco which has eased into low pressure is still hovering over lower Northeast, the eastern region and Cambodia. It is moving northward toward Myanmar and this, coupled with southwest monsoon, will cause heavy rains in the Northeast, the central plains, eastern and southern provinces.

Provinces facing heavy rains during September 17-19 include Sakaew, Prachin Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi Trat, Kanchanaburi, Petchaburi, Prachuab Khiri Khan, Chumporn, Ranong, Phang-nga, Surat Thani and Bangkok.

In Trat on Thursday, the amount of rainfalls was measured at 148 mm; Satun, 124mm; Phang-nga, 89mm; Chon Buri 82mm; Ranong 80mm and Surat Thani 79mm.

Placing hopes on a possible storm is ludicrous to say the least. Maybe they should try praying to Buddha as well. They would not have had this shortage problem if they had better water management and gov systems without corruption.

Exactly ! Let's not bother with mundane things like planning ahead as we can easily rely on mother nature, fortune tellers getting it right and keeping evil spirits placated.

When you have to place hope on the weather to increase the supply in reservoirs, you are not travelling well , however OZ and lots more countries have this problem generally because of being underfunded and not much of a vote catcher , the Thai Administration and the water corporation should adopt an old motto "Be Prepared", build more dams in catchment area's not rivers, less lip service spent on this area and putting money where your mouth is would solve this problem.coffee1.gif

You forgot to mention cloud seeding.

Too bad they don't have a cloud hoe......I seed my garden & hoe out the weeds kind of hoe.

Then they could prevent flooding as easy as they can make it rain.

because it's a well known fact that corruption causes evaporation and theft of water in dams and rivers coffee1.gif

hoping for the weather eg a storm to provide more water is totally unacceptable reservoirs are needed in areas which are mostly affected .

Pattaya area is served by it's reservoir "Mabprachan Lake" which, some days ago, was dry. no rain = no water and that no matter how many additional reservoirs are built whistling.gif

No, but it helps to get gullible people to believe things like you just wrote.

But didn't Pattaya have floods last month?

Well as a short term solution a couple of storms with some sustained rainfall, in the right part of the country would help.

and sonkran lasting only 2 days.

I really don't think that the water games at Sonkran, tedious as they may get, really have that much effect.

...and after that, they will go back to a deep slumber and last year, we will face the exact same problems again!

Putting hope on STORMS?

Seriously?

Last time I checked, storms cause people to loose their homes and livelihood.

Oh, well...all for the greater good!coffee1.gif

What other way is there to increase the amount of water flowing into reservoirs apart from that produced by the weather? Where else does water come from?

Water well irrigation reduces independance on mother nature!

And it's not rocket science, easy to understand! But I forget what we are dealing with here!

All these ideas take money and we do have priorities like submarines and planes and trains to China. These Baron Munchausen schemes are a priority. It seems the train idea is on hold as the budget now seems to have increased some 30% and they have not even put a spade into the ground yet. Maybe a bid for a future Olympic games is the answer. Focus peoples attention in another direction. Let happiness return to the land.

Yea, it's not a case of moving water from point A to point B...Thailand has rivers and canals everywhere to move water around (all of Southeast Asia does)....it's just a case of not having enough water anywhere in the country/region to fill all the reservoirs , fill the rivers/canals, rice paddies, fish ponds, etc. And I do expect the govt's water management could stand a big improvement---a real improvement versus being reactive...they should try out being proactive sometimes.

Wow,.... without regards that Pattaya people lose their homes,.... only in Thailand. You so called ambassadors, You'll get your wish after Cyclone October is over,, wanna bet????

and don't start complaining. if you have no homes, all your belongings are wet and no crops to grow or even supply to countrywide...... like in 2011.......

How about an aqueduct?Every 5yr. Old can build that.Something like in Califonia from north to south

You mean copy a 1000 year old idea great!! The north to south idea scares me. The USA is surely eyeing the far north (like Canada) to provide for their wasteful habits. I just hope the war over water idea does not come true in the not to distant future. With a future Republican president this could become a distinct possibility.

Last time you checked did you not notice that storms are a natural phenomenon that no-one has any control over? Thailand is not inviting storms to visit us in order to replenish the reservoirs at the expense of it's citizen's homes and livelihoods.

Where did you buy your rose colored glasses?. Definitely not the words of a conservationist. Do you own a water gun factory? When do you consider to late when the taps run dry, when you hit the switch and the lights do not come on? When you push the handle and the little brown submarines go no where? This last one is my favorite. Each time I pull the handle I stand in awe that they actually disappear somewhere. Where that somewhere is God only knows.

...and last time you checked, what was Thailand exactly doing in terms of water- management, except for a) hoping there will be no flood or b )hoping there will be a storm to fight a drought?
