BANGKOK: -- FORMER NATIONAL Legislative Assembly president Meechai Ruchuphan will let Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha know directly should he accept an invitation to chair the new charter drafting body, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam has said.

Meechai had already acknowledged the government's intention for him to take the job, Wissanu said yesterday.

Wissanu also said he was considering other candidates to become members of the new Constitution Drafting Committee, while other government figures had approached people to sit on the committee.

He said he had personally approached six or seven people, while discussions were under way with more than 10 other potential candidates.Altogether, between 30 and 40 people had been approached, he said. Wissanu said this did not mean the National Council for Peace and Order chief, Prayut, would go with all the proposed names as the number exceeded the 21-member maximum.

The potential members' qualifications and "suitability" for the job were being considered, he added.

He said he was deciding whether to invite former members of the National Reform Council, the Constitution Drafting Committee and other former NLA members to sit on the new panel.

As such, the name list couldn't be disclosed because reputations would be tarnished if Prayut didn't choose them, Wissanu said.

"Although we have approached many of them by now, I feel a bit worried as not all have said 'yes'," he said.

Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan said the final decision on the make-up of the committee would be made by the PM after he returns from attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

He confirmed the name list would remain confidential.

Regarding the selection of the reform steering council members, Prawit said a considerable number of names had been submitted but the list had not yet been finalised as he had to wait for the premier to return to Thailand.
