I purchased the new mbp with retina 15inch and it says in the spec that the battery should last 9 hours.

This week I used it at work each day and confirm that it lasts only about 5 hours. How do I check the battery on this laptop?

Maybe they mean that if you turn it on for 9 hours and dont use any software or internet then maybe the battery will last 9 hours. Or have a purchased a lemon?

If the manufacturer claims 9 hours then 5 hours in real world use sounds about right.

You need to check what the 9 hours use was claimed for.

For example it might say that it will last for 9 hours of web browsing - if you are doing more intensive processing than that (editing video footage for example) then the battery will last less
