Military warning to young men seeking to avoid conscription

Coming out of high school, I had over a dozen scholastic scholarships to some top level universities in the U.S. But this was 1967, which was the time of "Sex, Drugs & Rock and Roll". I just had a feeling that if I went on to college, I'd either flunk out from partying too much, or get kicked out for partying too much. Either way, I'd blow it. Ok, so I join the Marines. Figure some time there will help me settle down. Liked it so much, I ended up staying for 20 years and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. Also managed to get both my B.A. and M.A. while I was in. It's definitely not the life for everyone, but it was the perfect life for me.

Killing unarmed foreigners, including women and children, for money ........ great career choice.

One should not condemn those who chose a career in the Armed Services or those who don't choose and end up conscripted. Our energy should be directed at understanding and ending the need for the military in the first place.

You may say I'm a dreamer.

should be all volunteers. if they can't get the numbers they need, then incentives like paying for collage.

maybe the young boys could be trained to fight one on one instead of five on one.

AND LEARN TO DRIVE.

I hear the Thai Army's Cyber Center needs a few good men to block porn sites.

Conscription is barbaric and disgusting.

Thailand is not unique in having mandatory service (or some substitute). Switzerland comes to mind as being one of those barbaric and disgusting places. In all it looks like 60 or so countries do this.

Why is there even a conscription program from a military perspective?

You make a good point. Mandatory conscription made the military vastly unpopular in many developed countries. So they jettisoned it. Other ways have been found to coerce young people to becoming willing servants, murderous pawns, and cannon fodder of the global military-industrial assemblage.

Pretend for a minute that you are in charge and are running the show. What could you do to get a more pliable pool of volunteers for the armed forces? Well, for instance, you could increase unemployment by adjusting monetary policy. That would tend to make people a little more inclined to enlist. Or you could cut social services to low-income groups, leaving young people desperate to escape their situation. You can also cut taxes on the wealthy while increasing the tax burden on the poor, again creating a vast pool of the 'precariat'. You could also gut grants and scholarships for higher education, or simply make the cost of higher ed astronomical, so that few could afford it. You could also, of course, pass laws to chop the legs off the labor movement, so that real wages fall even as productivity and profits reach new heights. You could also offshore jobs to countries where wages are much less, but the labor pool is vast, thereby increasing the number of wage workers globally by 2 billion in thirty years. You could begin military programs in the schools, to inculcate "national values" and military culture into youth at a very young age, when they cannot begin to imagine another way of viewing the world. You could also propagandize endlessly the virtues of the military as defender of the nation, using advertising, appearances at sporting events, endorsements by famous persons, etc.

Or, crazy as it sounds, you could do all of the above. And you would enjoy the added benefit of rising capital accumulation by a select few.

Of course, if a country is poor enough, and the supply of unemployed youth is large enough, things quickly become rather simple. India, for example, has never had conscription, yet its military is one of the largest in the world.

One would imagine that the Thai military could someday adopt the path of least resistance (and maximum coercion) and simply do away with compulsory service.

What happened to the lottery?

You can actually do a voluntary weekly training starting with 16. Don't need to do full time service and when you're 21 you're already an officer. Good for the kids to get involved and make connectioYpu

If your school results are below par, you can't enter the Voluntary weekly para-mlitary training.

Careful now. This might be deemed suitable for a charge under Article 113/114, or even 112.

Thailand is unique, in every possible attribute. At last that's what 97.3265% of the respondents said in a recent Dusit Poll.

That said, they could easily staff the military here from the prisons, except for the officer ranks of course. Just offer them a choice of jail or military service, after they've been found guilty or confessed.

2015 and they expect this ????

sorry if it was me i would take a stance, or emigrate..

could not think of anything worse than being in the ''Military''...

Like the Syrian refugees migrants.

Particularly in Syria, hence the images of masses of predominantly young men flooding Europe.

That may well be, but not being an American I would think the difference between the 2 military establishments would be like chalk and cheese.

ok, lets force the young boys of the rice farmers in the North into the military. Train them to fire M-16s, ambush convoys, how to evade capture, jungle warfare and survival, URBAN warfare... wait

maybe we should rethink this...

Hi all just to say after spending 24 yrs in the Armed forces its a profession like any other it suits some and not others, conscription is pointless unless you have a major conflict and your regular force are being push to the limits, why not have a system like the TA or reservists ?

also i believe if it was fair across the board it would be ok not just the poor or farm kids or middle income people and all the generals get paid enough to hire domestic staff. if you have to have conscription use it for project that help the people. ( ensuring people don't get rick or ripped off)

and last point if we pursued peace the same way we do wars or weapon manufacture then life for everyone would be a lot better

they could always report for duty but then do a corporal Klinger and turn up in women's clothing every day hoping for a discharge

Huh? Men in womans clothing? This is Thailand you are talking about?

It may not be the "discharge" you are expecting..

Does this rule also apply to the children of the Bangkok fortunate few? Just askin'

Quite a number of my high school students do not do their military training. I guess a small donation into the right pocket will suffice.

When did high school students become eligible for conscription? Conscription applies for males between the ages of 21 and 30.

Are you teaching special ed classes?

Even when called up for the conscription lottery, if one doesn't pull the red ticket, one is not conscripted. As well, hundreds of thousands of Thais have avoided conscription through Ror Dor activity.

High school boys can do their "military training" from grade 10-12. They go every Wednesday afternoon and do this. I'm not sure what they call this activity in Thai. If they do that successfully there is no conscription or lottery for them. They have completed their requirements for the government.

Ok, for the "Uninformed" and the "Ignorant".

1 - As a Gunnery Sergeant, there was only 1 rank left I could have attained, and that would have been Master Gunnery Sergeant.

2 - In the Marine Corps (especially), and in the US Army, Gunnery Sergeants are on the same level as GOD! Actually, if you ask the average Marine or Soldier who he puts his faith in the most, God comes in second place.

3 - Officers, at least the smart ones, pay damn close attention to what a Gunny says. Why? Because the Gunny has "Been there, done that".

4 - In the US military, especially in the combat troops, you don't get to the position of Gunny just because you have longevity. You damn well earn that position.

4 - NOT ONCE in 20 years, and being in combat in many theaters of operations around the world, did I, or any of my men kill a single child or unarmed woman! NOT ONCE! People who like to spout that bull shit are talking out their asses. The people I killed would have killed me if given the chance, and trust me, they were all armed.

So, my suggestion is that if you don't know what the hell you are talking about, it's best to keep your mouth shut.
