Punish alcohol-backing celebs, says group

BANGKOK: -- The Stop Drink Network has said celebrities who recently posted photos of themselves consuming branded alcohol drinks on popular social media site Instagram had violated the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act and should face the prospect of jail time.

The group said the celebrities had also written captions suggesting others drink the brands.

Network representative Kamron Chudecha yesterday said such posts could be deemed alcohol advertising via social media - a violation of Article 32 of the Act and punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to Bt500,000.

The network's representatives will meet with Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn today to demand legal action be taken against the celebrities and anyone else involved in the posts if their purpose was commercial gain.

These dicks REALLY need to get a life! If the celebrities aren't employed by the drinks companies then it's just their private life they are showing the world just like approximately 5 million other Thais! Freaking idiots!

This is great.

Celebs (and others with deep pockets and well heeled daddies) are routinely afforded almost total immunity from legal sanctions. Murder by vehicle while intoxicated included. Not a problem. A few contrite-ish photo ops are sometimes included but generally a few well placed envelopes are enough to ensure impunity.

So...now these do-gooders actually expect officialdom to pursue and jail the privileged few for an Instagram beer? If it weren't so dumb it would be funny.

Another example of why zealots of any sort are best avoided.

Do you really think these "celebs" do this for free?

Ridiculous. Adults should be allowed to drink alcohol, as an informed choice. The idiots who are saying this should be jailed. personally I don't go into all this slefie and FB showing what I had to eat or drink but calling for Jail time! People do want this country to be like North Korea.

also not everybody supports a religion where alcohol is bad. These people should realize that.

Alcohol is the cause so much misery and suffering in the world it's understandable that certain people would like to see it made illegal and controlled like other dangerous drugs, that cause misery and suffering.

If I concocted a drug that had the same effect as Alcohol it would certainly be illegal, and would be rightfully classified as a Class A drug that could get me a life sentence in Jail or even the death sentence in certain countries, yet I can buy as much Alcohol as I want.

If governments are willing to Jail people for smoking a plant, surely they should be jailing manufacturers and users of a Poison that is directly or indirectly responsible for untold illness, Deaths, Violence, Abuse etc etc.

Even though the evidence is there, TAX keeps Alcohol legal. Just as Cigarettes are legal purely through TAX, they are totally anti social, they stink, be in the vicinity of a smoker and your hair and clothes will stink and you are breathing in the smoke too, and to cap it all off, they kill people, yet unbelievably, they are legally manufactured.

Ban Alcohol and Cigarettes as far as I'm concerned, and stop celebrities making Alcohol look cool to young impressionable people.

No doubt those already addicted to Cigarettes or Alcohol will disagree, then again, those users of Illegal drugs disagree with the illegality of their drug of choice too.

I think these "celebs" are no different than most Thais they splash their lives over the internet, Facebook, Instagram or whatever. If it isn't advertising then it's nothing to do with others what they do!

If Thailand honestly wanted to control the sale of alcohol then it could do what other countries do.. Uphold the law!

How about just locking everyone up and then citizen has to prove they are worthy to be released?

That is the most rediculous idea I have ever heard of, I shall keep my eyes peeled when reviewing the Cabinet minutes to see when it will be implimented.

Watch this space ;-)

Brokenrecord. Do you think that everyone who drinks alcohol,or takes drugs for that matter, goes out and kills people? No it would not be rightful, because it is my decision what I do with my body, I don't need Prayut or Yingluck making the decision for me. I don't need a mother replacement. That does not only count for alcohol and nicotine but also for other drugs and prescribed medicine (exception Antibiotics). Drugs exist longer than humans to, even animals like to eat fermenting fruits and get drunk....

The uproar seems mostly to be about the 'celeb' pictured who killed someone in a drink-driving related incident some time ago.

Yeah put them in jail like they do with all corrupt cops, monks and politicians one punishment for all reasons. Don't make them just "inactive" celebs.

I neither smoke nor take drugs but I occasionally drink sensibly as do 99.9% of people. But just because I don't participate in the former two I'm not pig headed enough to want to ban them. Freedom of choice in the developed world. As I said before if you don't like freedom of choice then you should live somewhere where those freedoms are taken away.

I agree that the world would be a better place without cars and motorbikes, along with alcohol and cigarettes. It's unfortunate that society has been designed or conditioned to see these things as necessities for living or for having a good time.

Would you want to ban them if your family were wiped out by a drunk driver, or you watched a loved one die from Lung cancer caused by passive smoking ?

Putting poison in your body is not sensible in any amount.

As for freedom of choice, it's YOU that are suggesting I have no right to express an opinion that differs to your own, even suggesting that if I do, I should move to another country, Is that the freedom of choice freedom I have according to the book of Leeedwards ?

Freedom of speech is a human right. I just as is the freedom to make ones own choices which you seem to want to take away. Sensible laws should be abided by of course. I am an advocate of not drinking and driving and the full extent of the law should be brought upon people who disregard it. As for the health risks of smoking and alcohol well that's for intelligent people to consider themselves not to be dictated to. Again, freedom of choice. It's what intelligent humans are capable of making.

In which case why wasn't that ACTUALLY mentioned in the report! Strange item to leave out!

Broken record. I don't want or care if you do anything. I'm merely stating that your suggestion of taking away people's freedom to choose to put "poisons" in their bodies doesn't fair well in today's developed modern world. What ammunition do I need when my opinion represents what the high majority of informed intellectual people think. Taking away freedom of choice is unacceptable.

Alcohol advertising is unlawful here, as it is in many places.

The advertising ban does not prevent anyone from enjoying a drink, it is intended to prevent the booze companies from glamorizing their product, particularly in the eyes of youngsters.

Breweries are not permitted to advertise alcohol on TV or in magazines. Why should they be allowed to get around the law by using celebrities to advertise on social media.

You have made your choices, it is your life, and you will probably live a lot longer than me. I drink beer, which I like, and I smoke, which I am trying to stop (yet again). This is my choice. I make mistakes and live with the consequences. You are responsible for your own life. Gambling is banned here, but I have seen Thai families lose house and farm through it. Suddenly making a common habit illegal just gives it an extra thrill for young people. Did you never get a kick from buying a beer when you were underage?

It is worthy of note that in England every Saturday night during the EPL season, Singha Corporation advertises their fine brews on pitch-side billboards at many matches.

Chang of course gets constant coverage with the Everton boys in blue. At Formula 1 racetracks Johnnie is still Walking advising people to think before they drink.
