Google GPS advice

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I am going to the north from bangkok (400 km) by car. Is anybody had experience if the android google GPS with data connection gonna work in remote areas?

Works Fine, hardly use the Car one anymore. Easier to sit at Amazon over a Cha and plot a few selected waypoints ,{Drop a Pin} in comfort.coffee1.gif .

I am using HERE maps, available from Play Store for free. There are maps for many countries, and it is working without internet connection. Just download the maps at home.

does Here maps have it in English and Thai ?

to me Thai is important if you want to find out off the way places or the road is blocked and local can tell you another way

One more thing. I have Thai driving license, do I have to carry passport with me when I drive?

Is anywhere 400kms north of Bkk considered remote?

Thats like Tak, Phitsanulok, Lomsak, Chayaphum at a guess.

Ye, am going to Chaiyaphum. I been there before by bus and many times didn't have reception (true).

Anyway today I tested google maps in BKK on different phones, its very slow no real time navigation. Next I will test Here maps.

Google Maps are fine....make sure you have the "voice" option turned on for directions....know how to turn it off as well!

Well, today I tested Here maps. Working fine in Bangkok. Thanks for the replies.

I use Google in Thailand, but in Laos I use OSMand which has , like Here, offline downloadable maps and it's voice directions work in Laos whereas Google's don't (yet?)

There are several of these programs available on Google Play........Sygic is by far the most popular, but I don't use it very much myself....I don't think it has all the functions here in S.E. Asia.

I find Here maps not that good at finding places here, so I use Google to find it then I can select to use Here for the voice navigation (which connects to my car's Sync2 system over Bluetooth)
