Thailand corruption exhibition 'should be shown in malls'

Featured Replies

Why limit it to shopping malls? A cheaper option

would be to post signs at all border entrances saying

"welcome to the corruption museum."

I wonder if the entry fee for foreigners is 10 times that of Thai price...?

I like it! They should have a wax museum dedicated to Corruption in Thailand: Naming Names, and Kicking Butt. Perhaps video too.

The BIB shakedowns at roadblocks. Backroom deals between politicians and corporate executives. Tea money passing hands in the Land Office. Mafia and BIB collaboration on the beaches of Phuket to shakedown jetski rental victims. The Wall of Lost Face, naming the names of those convicted for corruption. One could make a pretty extensive exhibit. whistling.gif

Unfortunately, the museum will do little to change attitudes. A survey not long ago showed most Thai people not only knew their country was corrupt to the core, but that they actually benefited as a result.

Still, it's good to know see the nation which puts so much store on saving face is prepared to lose it publicly. A stumble in the right direction.

Sorry - done a "double" in error.

"THE Museum of Thai Corruption..."

Quite redundant. I thought the entire country was a museum of Thai corruption.

Will the it also show how the land and the permits to build the malls which will house the exhibit were obtained?

I agree the entire country is a museum of corruption. I am sure we all have been "touched" by the big C at one time or another here. Fortunately we do not travel in the super corruption circles. One need only look at the power structure here with all its nepotism.

There should be at least one faceless exhibit...where Thais can go and place their own face in the slot for picture taking...

This would truly represent the face of Thai corruption...

South East Asia is full of corruption , Not just Thailand it's an Everyday common practise, So how do you eradicate corruption , if people you are dealing with are corrupt, How do you trust a liar. at least you know a thief is a thief but you never know what a liar is thinking, or if you believe them. That's another post for some body why do Thais lie so much.

Why not make a Museum of Accountability and Honesty. Tour those through the government and schools. That'll rattle their cages.

"Museum-goers captured images of the sculptures with their phone cameras as if they were rare art pieces."

Surely some of the sculptures of corruption must have depicted individuals at inactive posts figuring out new ways and learning from their mistakes.

"It is not Thai culture to visit museums..."

Wow. Why go after knowledge when one get white skin and an Iphone.

Its true I would think, the average Thai probably don't know where a museum is if you asked them.... Unless they work there or something :)

How about a Madame Tussauds type section as part of the exhibition?

It could display waxwork replicas of all the Thai corrupt officials and government ministers from past to present day. Unfortunately a shopping mall would not have sufficient space to display all the waxwork models, but sure a football pitch could be allocated for this grand event.

Those not marching in lockstep with the junta will have their corruption exposed and punished

I like the tactic. Turn corruption from the relatively quiet backhanding to acknowledging it as one of those everyday things that has to be dealt with. Turn it into something that makes the tourist guides and the "What's On?" listings in the magazines. "Hey, did you hear? In Thailand corruption is so prevalent they even put on shows about it." The art museum across from MBK had an exhibit that is a big transit map of Bkk with stations all over the area, the title was "If There Was No Corruption." I haven't been there in a while, I don't know if it's still up, it was right near the overpass entrance.

The hotel owner who published the leaflet on dealing with the Thonglor shakedown squad a few months ago gets a gold star, for the same sort of tactic: shine light on the hush-hush corrupt operations by making it something that needs to be acknowledged and addressed, and openly educate people on how to deal with it.

Yes, take pictures of it, then save them somewhere. Someday the exhibit will be banned, destroyed, and forgotten.
