PATTANI: -- TWO SMALL bombs were detonated yesterday morning in Pattani's Khok Pho district after Tuesday night's bomb attacks at seven locations and detection of suspicious items at several areas in the district.

Yesterday's bomb attacks did not cause any casualties.

The authorities believed such explosions were aimed at shaking public confidence and damaging the area's economy.

Fourth Army Region chief Maj-General Wiwat Pathompak, who visited Khok Pho yesterday, has instructed security measures to be beefed up in the region's key economic areas, while urging the public to alert officers if they notice any suspicious activity.

An explosion took place at 5.30am yesterday in front of a policeman's house, another one occurred at 6.30am in front of a garage, both in the Khok Pho Municipality area. The Pattani explosive disposal team also destroyed suspicious items at four locations at 8am yesterday in tambon Na Pradu.

Increased security

Security in Pattani was visibly increased with military presence in community areas, especially in the Muang Pattani Municipality and the Taluban Municipality in Sai Buri district, a source reported.

Police also were looking for two vehicles - which were reportedly bomb-laden to launch attacks in the far South, the source said. One car reportedly fled the Samui bombing scene and the other, a pickup truck, was stolen from Yala province.

On Tuesday night, seven small explosions - from home-made bombs of less than a kilogram or hand grenades - occurred in Khok Pho district. There were four explosions in tambon Na Pradu, leaving an assistant village headman slightly injured, while tambon Khok Pho, where three explosions occurred, saw three residents suffering slight injuries.

Meanwhile, assistant police chief Pol Maj-General Suchat Theerasawat yesterday visited Narathiwat's Tak Bai district to follow up on the progress in the police probe into Tuesday's bombing that killed defence volunteer Ismaae Jihamart, 54.

The attack, using a 15kg bomb planted under the victim's pickup truck, was believed to have been carried out by insurgent suspect Mahamaming Mama as revenge for another Tak Bai clash that happened exactly three years ago and led to the death of his younger brother Abdulrohim Mama, according to a national-security source.
