US voters split over Biden’s decision not to run for president

WASHINGTON: -- There has been a mixed reaction in the US to news that Joe Biden will not be seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2016 presidency.

The vice president’s announcement, which came on Wednesday, ended months of suspense and removes a huge political obstacle for front-runner Hillary Clinton.

“Unfortunately, I believe we’re out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination. But while I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent,” said Biden, 72, standing alongside President Barack Obama.

Outside the White House in Washington, some people said they were surprised about Biden’s decision, while others thought it was the right way to go.

“I don’t actually find it that surprising. I sort of figured that’s what would happen. I don’t think he ever would’ve beaten Clinton or Sanders,” said one woman.

A man added: “Well I’m amazed that Biden’s not running, I think he would’ve had a pretty good chance. This will certainly end the Trump idea of the presidency, because Hillary will now be anointed president next year.”

With Clinton facing slipping poll numbers, Biden’s supporters had been pushing him to go for the nomination. But Clinton impressed many during last week’s Democratic debate, turning the tide back in her favour.

He's available if Hillary flames out. Not likely but still possible. No way will the democrats nominate Sanders. Biden is a good man who could have / should have been president but this is his last chance (Hillary flaming out). There are lots of good men and women who should have been president. Such as Jerry Brown and Henry Wallace. That's just how it goes.

I have a feeling Trump will be the next president, he's been on a roll for months now and I'll be surprised if the democrats win regardless of who's running.

The story of Henry Wallace and what happened to his vice presidential run should be required reading for any degree in PoliSci or history, instead of fading into the dim past. Oliver Stone did a great job of telling it in his Showtime series, "The Untold History of the United States".

Having lived in California for many years, the best I can say about Jerry Brown is that he enjoyed Linda Ronstadt's, er, company...I liked his dad, though.

Very fortunate he's not running.

The choice is now between the Clown, bailed out to big to fail Trump, or more of what you see is what you get from Clinton except the Drone Obama will be gone.

Peanut farmers movie stars near bankrupt clowns what a fiasco.

The banks stopped Trump from sliding into the cesspit, don't be fooled that anything will change except your pockets will get lighter and your pension scheme will probably get robbed.

He could not run a casino and had to be bailed out and financialy managed and you think he could run a country--- my god .

Biden's no fool, he seriously considered a run, his family finally gave him the green light, but Biden knows what the outcome would have been.

Biden's too intricately linked to Obama for disenfranchised Democrats.

After a suitable passage of time and some vice-presidential mutterings, Biden will endorse Clinton.

Trump is like a High School big boy with arrested development. Everything for him is either love or hate. He says he loves Putin, but if Putin gave him a sneer, Trump might hate him. Love/hate, up/down, friend/enemy. We need maturity in the White House, not an overgrown kid stuck in Redneckville.

I think Trumps will be the last chance for America to stop sliding into the cesspit.

It might miss the cesspool and instead slide in to the fire pit of a war or two, like his Republican prez predecessors did.

He got bailed out by his Daddy one time. The other 3 times he went bankrupt, I don't know, but probably the banks got bullied by him saying, "if you foreclose on me, 5,000 casino workers will be out of jobs!"

Except he's already indirectly endorsed Sanders, as evidenced by his recent statements on wealth inequality - which echo Sanders.

Quinnipiac poll today shows Carson reversed the standings and surged ahead of Trump by 9 or 10 points.

The Quinnipiac poll was only for Iowa (1 state) - nationally, Trump still leads.

If Trump becomes the Republican Presidential Candidate, Hillary becomes the POTUS.

....or Sanders. Sanders leads Hillary in several polls taken recently.
Not any national polls.

Just my opinion but I do believe a Biden/Warren ticket would have been virtually unbeatable.

Hillary and whoever she picks, not so much so.

I agree that would have been a compelling ticket.

As far as Hillary's VP pick, wow, that is really such a mystery now!

It will be very revealing.

All we can do now is speculate.

Of course it won't be Sanders or Warren.

But who will it be?!?

I think probably a white man though.

Why do you think it won't be Elizabeth Warren, ...because she's also a woman? I tend to agree, but then again, it would be powerful to have two women on the ticket. Reps would have conniption fits.

Well, two reasons.

I think picking any woman would be seen as overplaying the feminist card. Not mainstream enough and would hurt her chances.

The other reason is I don't know yet whether Hillary will pick a VP to the right or left of her. Or about the same.

Warren would be to her left.

The only choices I can think of now are O'Malley of Maryland who seems very similar to Hillary politically, but boring or Julian Castro, a bold pick, very junior and of course Latino. O'Malley wouldn't offer any geographical balance. Maryland will vote democratic anyway.
