Chatting to a friend about engine changes and he suggested/thought that if an engine were changed in a vehicle the cubic capacity of the replacement could NOT exceed that of the original engine.

I know many have done this but wonder what the law states.

Any ideas guys??

I've had a couple of vehicles with the engine change registered by DLT (Government) in the Registration Book, both engines larger capacity than the origional .

No problem upping the size of the engine. I went from a 2.5 to 4 liter. BUT you need to get a letter from the shop that did the work. Then take the car & letter to the nearest Land Transportation Office where they will inspect the car and then change the engine number in the registration book.

Do they just do a visual inspection, or are there emission and safety inspections?

Just a visual inspection of engine number when I went. Since my car was 50 years old I got the car inspected each year for emissions and safety at that time.

I thought they capped the engine sizes to 3.0L.....Any penalty for going over?

No penalty. No cap on engine sizes in Thailand just a bigger import tax on new vehicles with big engines or high horsepower.
