Surat Thani province's merit-making ritual draws huge crowd

SURAT THANI, 28 October 2015 (NNT) – A merit-making ritual and boat race in Surat Thani province have drawn a large number of villagers and tourists.


Surat Thani provincial governor Wongsasiri Phromchana presided over the Chak Phra robe-offering ritual and boat race along Tapi River, co-hosted by the provincial seat's administrative organization and Tourism Authority of Thailand from October 24 - November 1, 2015.

The event, attended by local villagers and a number of tourists from China and Malaysia, features the boat race to win a royal trophy from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The merit-making event marks the end of the Buddhist Lent and signifies cultural heritage and identity of the southern province.

Songkhla holds leadership program widows

SONGKHLA, 28 October 2015 (NNT) – Songkhla Social Development and Human Security Office has organized a leadership program for mothers who have been affected by the unrest in the South.


The program has been geared toward women who lost their husbands in the southern unrest. It features a variety of activities aimed at boosting the morale of this group of single mothers, such as an exchange of ideas and experiences, consultancy and motivational talks by experts and those sharing the same plight.

Deputy Governor of Songkhla Satit Thampradit who chaired the seminar said the objectives of the meeting were to strengthen the morale of widowed mothers and encourage them to help one another by forming their own network.

237 orphans and 104 widows in Songkhla have reportedly been affected by the decade-long southern violence.

Jakthip says he has not seen Prawut's resignation


BANGKOK:-- Pol General Jakthip Chaijinda, the national police chief, has denied suggestions that Pol Lt-General Prawut Thavorn-siri has resigned from the police and he insisted that his removal from the post of police spokesman had nothing to do with the recent lese majeste case.


"Prawut is still serving as a police officer. I have not seen his resignation letter and no search has been conducted at his house," Jakthip said

Arrest warrants for 66 over Phuket riots


PHUKET:-- Arrest warrants have been issued for 66 persons allegedly involved in the October 11 riot at Phuket's Thalang Police Station, deputy national police chief Pol General Chalermkiat Srivorakhan said Wednesday, adding probe into the protest that resulted in violence and the deaths of two youngsters, which triggered the riot, were ongoing.
