I bank with Bangkok Bank. I opened my account in Chiang Mai nearly four years ago, I shifted to Jomtien and transferred my bank account to Bangkok Bank, Jomtien. Last week I wanted to deposit some money at the ATM. Loaded the notes in but the machines will not accept the new 1000 baht notes! Spat them back. Go to the teller. 'Why machine not take 1000 baht note?'.

"Because new".

'But machine charge me 20 baht to take my money'.

"But cannot take new notes".

'OK. I deposit this 1000 baht'.

"OK Mister. 30 baht fee".

'But I've already paid 20 baht. Why I have to pay again?'.

"Personal service".

'But it's not my fault that your machine not take money. Now I pay twice.'

"Machine not take new notes. Now you use personal service'. 30 baht".

'OK'.

I get the receipt and notice that the 30 baht is made up of two separate entries. 20 baht fee and a 10 baht 'commission'.

'What is this 10 baht commission for?'

"You open account in Chiang Mai. 10 baht commission".

AAAAAAAAAGH. It just gets too hard at times.

Give a man a gun and he will rob a bank. Give a man a bank and he will rob the world.

In all likelihood the teller has no ability to make the computer cancel the fee, and would probably get in trouble if she tried.

As a foreigner I never deposit cash into a machine. It is too easy for whoever opens it to claim that some or all of your deposit was not there. I once asked my bank in Canada how they keep their employees honest on that front. The answer was "We have two employees there, when we are counting the money deposited." To which I replied, with appropriate hand gestures, "One for me, one for you,...."

In Thailand the machine counts the money, asks if you accept it's total.

You can refuse and it gives the money back.

You can accept and it prints a receipt.

Tell us how you think it can cheat you?

I don't understand why the OP was charged a fee. I make cash deposits in Bangkok Bank Cash Deposit Machines here in Bangkok all the time...deposits into my Bangkok Bank accounts here in Bangkok....I've never been charged a fee. And I've never been charged a fee when doing a deposit with a teller like the OP was.

I'm always depositing 1,000 baht notes but to tell you the truth I don't remember if they were the old or new notes or a mixture.

Based on the OP's post he was depositing in Jomtiem to his Bangkok Bank account in Jomteim based on my understanding of his post. I don't understand why there were any fees unless he left some info out like he was depositing to a Bangkok Bank account outside of Jomtiem.

What do you mean 'as a

foreigner'? Do you think

the person opening the

machine can tell which

notes were deposited by

a farang?

Obviously since you have never used a cash deposit machine in Thailand you don't know how they work. Once the money is counted, displayed on the screen for you confirmation, which account you are depositing to, etc., you are then printed out a receipt of the deposit. There is no person in the Cash Deposit Machine or standing right behind it counting the money as you put it in. And if you wanted to immediately slide over to the Passbook Update Machine that is probably right next to the Cash Deposit Machine you would see your passbook is updated to reflect the cash deposit you made a few seconds earlier.

You must be talking about a cash deposit "drop box" where you can put some money in a envelope with a deposit slip and drop it in....kinda like a postal drop box. Yes, in that case a bank employee later takes all the envelopes out, counts the funds in each envelop to ensure it makes the deposit slip, and then deposits the money to your account.

Yes. Thanks. You are right but it was just a comment I was making. So many of these posts seem to want to over-analysis. It was just a comment.

Half way through the procedure the machine reboots and doesnt give you a receipt or your money back. Just an idea.

Choose the right bank and you wont get charged.

Firstly, please do not speak in baby Thaiglish. I know the Thais do. There is no need to copy.

The second fee (30B) appears to relate to an out-of-region transaction. I suspect your account has not been transferred to Jomtien. Do you have any evidence that it has? So, the second fee is correct. I deposit cash often at the counter with SCB, often large amounts, always no charge.

When moving from one area to another area, it is easier in Thailand to open a new account. This is what the banks advise. It is easier than transferring an account from one branch to another branch. You don't even need to close the old account. Just empty it and it becomes dormant and no annual fees will be taken. To close it, you generally have to go to the branch in person which can be a nuisance if you have moved to another part of the country.

Take the failed machine deposit as a lesson. The tuition fee was 20 Baht.

Hope this helps.

They do the same if you change cash at the counter.

You give the cash, they go to a backoffice to copy the notes and your ID and then come back to change it.

In that backoffice they can easy take a 100 euro billiet from the pile and the farang has nothing to prove he really gave it to them.

They don't do that in bkk

I say here's £10,000 or whatever

They count it in front of me and under cctv so if they said it's only 9,500 or 9,900 there is proof , sometimes counting it twice but never been scammed in a major bank

Our local bank-branch in the sub never count before going to copy it in the backoffice. That's why i mentioned it.

They never scammed me because i sure won't accept that. Only one time at the TMB bank, i checked the rate for euro online and went there within 15 min. Then they gave me a lower rate then on their website. I even loaded their website on the cellphone and still they wouldn't give me that rate and i wanted to change a big amount that's why i went there.

But also at singapore airport they won't give the rate which is on the big screen behind them, even not when i told them to do so because that's cheating.

How would you not accept it if they did say that? You said in your previous post "and the farang has nothing to prove he really gave it to them." As the previous poster suggested very unlikely....

What reason did TMB and the exchange booth at Changi give for not giving you what you believed to be the correct rate - which for them was obviously not the correct rate or are you excluding commission charges......?

Well i can always call my hi-so friends, let's see if they want that. Or my free lawyers of my insurance. Or the government helpdesk for consumers.

Or i can jump on the counter and become famous in the newspapers in Europe. I don't understand why they are so unprofessional to not count it first in front of me before taking my money to a backoffice.

Before i handover my cash i always count it one more time again but i know i can also make mistakes.

In singapore i went to the moneychanger at changi and gave him the cash. When i got my SGD$ and the note i noticed i got a lower rate then on the screen which was right behind him. Then i asked him why that was and he said the screen was wrong and walked to the back to his boss or collegues. When he came back he said the screen was wrong, period.

In the meantime another farang came to change euro's at the window next to mine and i noticed we can speak the same language. So in our language i told him they are cheaters and he wouldn't get the rate of the screen. Then he was astonished as well and we both told the employee that it he was cheating but he didn't care.

The difference in the rate was very small though but why do they have those screens hanging there and not give it? There was no fee or anything, just like in thailand.

I expected Singapore to be very punctual, he could give me the rate of the screen or change the screenrate immediatly if it was an error. But he didn't care.

So since then i think Singapore is not as reliable as my homecountry in EU. This would never happen there or they would give me the price of the screen to not loose face.

Also one day i came back in BKK with much SGD$ and changed it at Don Muang SCB-moneychanger. All went well but he handed me 2000 baht too few. I showed him his mistake and before i finished my complaint he allready put the 2000 on the counter. So he knew exactly what he was doing and thought i was sleeping or so. So i'll never use SCB again.

You think other banks are different?

I withdrew 100,000B in cash from TMB. They put the 10 packs of bills through the counting machine, and I watched the count carefully as usual. Once verified they put each pack towards the back of their desk where I could just about see them but not very well. Then they put the packs in a big envelope. That part I watched, but I only counted 9 packs going in. I pointed this out and the cashier quickly found another pack on his desk that he had "forgotten".

Trust no one.

Comments like this make farangs in Thailand sound like morons. But then again, it could just be this isolated case.
