Russian airliner crashes in central Sinai - Egyptian PM

A Russian airliner has crashed in central Sinai with more than 200 people on board, the office of Egypt's prime minister has confirmed.

The Airbus A-321 had just taken off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, on its way to the Russian city of St Petersburg.

There were conflicting reports about the fate of the plane, some suggesting it had disappeared over Cyprus.

Most of the passengers are said to be Russian tourists.

Russian passenger aircraft with 220 onboard goes off radar, reportedly crashes over Egypt

A Russian plane carrying over 220 people has been lost from radars, according to sources in the Russian and Egyptian air traffic controllers. It's been reported that the plane crashed over Sinai.

Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail confirmed that the Russian plane did go missing over Sinai and said a cabinet-level crisis committee has been formed to deal with the incident.

Earlier, the Egyptian air accident chief said the Russian plane had safely left Egyptian airspace and made contact with Turkish air traffic control.

Conflicting reports over fate of 'missing' Russian plane

There are conflicting reports over the fate of a commercial Russian airliner which was reported missing over Egypt.

The plane, reportedly carrying 212 people, vanished from radar shortly after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh, a Red Sea resort, reported Reuters.

However there is confusion as to the plane's status, with some reports claiming the plane has crashed, while an Egyptian aviation official said it had made contact with Turkish air traffic controllers and was safe.

"The Russian airline had told us that the Russian plane we lost contact with is safe and that it has contacted Turkish air traffic control and is passing through Turkish skies now," Ayman al-Muqaddam said in a statement, according to Reuters.

Sky News reporting that the Egyptians are confirming this plane has crashed in the Sinai.

Lot of bad guys in the Sinai. Potentially this could be a missile strike.

If so, there may be a number of interested observers from Malaysia and Holland plus a few other countries.

In any event a sad day for a number of Russian families plus a huge blow to an already hard hit Egyptian tourist industry.

Egypt says it lost contact with a Russian aircraft

MERRIT KENNEDY, Associated Press

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's Ministry of Civil Aviation said it lost contact with a Russian aircraft Saturday carrying 217 passengers and 7 crew members over the restive Sinai peninsula, according to Egypt's state-run news agency.

A statement carried by the MENA agency said the plane took off from Sinai's Sharm el-Sheikh, a popular destination for Russian tourists, at 5:51 a.m. local time and disappeared from radar screens 23 minutes after takeoff.

It said the aircraft was bound for St. Petersburg in Russia and a search and rescue team is looking for the plane. Earlier in the day, an Egyptian official with the government's Incidents Committee told local media that the plane had briefly lost contact but was now safely in Turkish airspace.

Plane tracking website Flight Radar said Metrojet flight #7K9268 disappeared over Egypt 23 minutes after departure from Sharm el-Sheikh.

Turkish government spokesmen said they had no information about the missing Russian plane ever entering Turkish airspace. Air traffic control officials said they were not authorized to speak to the press. Officials from the Transport Ministry and the Civilian Air Transport Authority did not answer calls.

MENA said Egypt's Prime Minister Sherif Ismail had canceled a visit to the city of Ismailiya and formed an operations room to follow up on the situation.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on her Facebook page that Russian Embassy personnel in Egypt are working to clarify the situation.

Waiting on the cause....no reports yet of reasons for the crash.

I would not rule out an attack....seems too sureal.

If it was...then I suspect it is only the beginning.

If some terrorists moderate rebels shot down the airplane with some anti airplane weapon supplied by the USA, than we can start digging bunkers......

Lets hope it was technical problem or the pilots fault.....

shades of the ukraine? A bit of a leap.

I doubt seriously if the USA would support that, especially now that they are agreeing on a cease fire.

^^ If the map is correct, it went down a long way away from Syria. The people with weapons in that area would be Egyptians, Israelis, Palestinians or the local ISIS sympathizers.

Of course, it could just be an accident, it's really too early to speculate

No indication Russian plane that crashed in Egypt's Sinai was shot down: security sources

There were no indications that a Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula on Saturday was shot down, Egyptian security sources said.

Egypt's North Sinai is home to a two-year-old Islamist insurgency and militants affiliated to Islamic State have killed hundreds of soldiers and police.

Second A320 crash on take-off from Sharm El-Sheikh in the past few years. The last one went into the water, pilot disorientation said to be the main factor. Correction, the other was 737
