"enabling nations to protect assets against both emerging and established threats"

Emerging: Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand South ?

Established: Vietnam, Malaysia ?

This missile defense system doesn't seem to be appropriate for the region. Detection and destruction of low-level fighter aircraft, unmanned air vehicles and helicopters might better be served with upgraded ground-based radars, aerial/satellite surveilance systems, and locking vehicular and helicopter gun systems.

There's also a lot of dependable older missile-based systems for high speed, high altitude aircraft. I don't think the STARStreak air defence missile system can come close to their performance.

But I'm sure the STARSteak will be very effective against Lanna-style sky lanterns.

Yep, that makes much more sense than spending on education, healthcare and other cornerstones of a civilized society. On the plus side, at least the incoming submarine fleet will be safe.

Sadly, you just described the United States.

of those sneaky French... taking advantage of a military junta like that... biggrin.png

Marie-Laure Bourgeois, vice president of Thales in the South and Southeast Asia region, said STARStreak is the world's leading system of its class, enabling nations to protect assets against both emerging and established threats.

Now I believe her, ... but I do wonder just what assets the Thai military wants to protect from "emerging and established" threats... whistling.gif

Surely they want to protect against Thaksin.

Millions to defend against missles when, if for some God unknown reason

anyone wanted to attack Thailand, they would send about 30, mayb 31, ground

troops in 6 jeeps and take Bangkok while the "defense Team " sleeps ! Who

would waste million dollar missles when $ 12.00 worth of .45 Cal ammo would

do it ?

where is all the money coming from for this sudden spending spree? 78 million baht for armour plated Mercedes-Benz, missile defence system, submarines.

The military has their own budgets, with each branch allocated a certain amount. This is separate from the normal government budgets, and they are pretty much un-accountable for what they spend it on.

Yet another interesting event is:

Thailand is aiming to design and build military equipment and weapons systems on its own, according to Thai officials. Prawit Wongsuwan, the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Thailand shared the news at an exhibition on Monday, November 02, 2015. The Thai junta leader has conveyed that the government is bringing in the private sector to help Thailand meet its needs for defence systems and military technology independently.

Hope they can obtain proper visas and work permits, if they expect this to actually work...
