PM says will stand by 6-4-6-4 formula to general elections

BANGKOK, 7 November 2015 (NNT) – Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha says he will stand by the 6-4-6-4 formula to general elections while calling on all voters to select good and ethical people to represent them.

In his weekly televised speech, Gen Prayut said he does not put too much attention on who wins or loses in the election, but what he really cares about is how voters can be sure that their representatives will uphold the nation and people’s interests and dignity when running the administration.

The prime minister also voiced his support to the 6-4-6-4 roadmap which gives the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) 6 months to work on a new charter draft and another 4 months to hold a public referendum. Afterwards, the national legislative body will spend 6 months writing and passing organic laws, also known as fundamental laws. And the rest 4 months will be for an election campaign.

In order for Thailand to become a full democratic country, he said people must first understand its concept and solutions to problems the country is facing at the moment while noting that active public participation in the reform effort is much needed if Thailand were to get through this difficult period.

Next week in our village there is an election for the local mayor.

The only thing that most people seem to be considering is money. Money paid for their vote by one of the candidates. Only one is offering any money so seems to be guaranteed to win.

It is just incredibly sad that a significant proportion of the electorate are more concerned with getting 200bht than anything else.

Money paid out to win an election will be recouped MANY times over.

"Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha says he will stand by the 6-4-6-4 formula to general elections while calling on all voters to select good and ethical people to represent them."

Says the man with a very large amount of unexplained wealth in his bank account who is only "Prime Minister" because he took power from an elected government after going out of his way to ensure that they could not govern and promising over and over that he would not do so. I'm surprised he even knows what the word 'ethical' means.

6/4 - 6/4 at first I thought the good caretaker Prime Minister was giving us a Quinella at Happy Valley, that 6/4 formula is as good as any , whatever the outcome, it is clear as mud, might be prudent to bring on the Elections instead of talking about it , ( Like the water crisis ) and let's see how much in bribes are paid out on election day , not forgetting intimidation , anyway you look at it, at 6/4 I am glad I am not voting...................coffee1.gif

"he said people must first understand its concept and solutions to problems the country is facing..."

The number one problem this country is facing is that the military stages coups with impunity, and does so often enough to prevent democracy from ever taking root.

I'd say archaic defamation laws and 112 are the main problems facing the country.

Using the 6-4, 6-4 formula and the last 4 months being for the election campaign, means the actual elections won't take place for at least 20 months from the start date, which still needs to be announced. It could well be 2 more years before we see any change of government in Thailand.

What's even more sad is that this is legal.

Yes, small money... Unlike in my home country where those on entitlements look for who is going to increase the rental subsidies, food stamps and other free goodies; or those with high incomes looking at income tax reductions; or others looking for capital gains, corporate and estate tax advantages...

An electorate could balance personal and societal benefits. Maybe some do....

I can understand people taking the money, I would too. But do you honestly think that because of that people won't still vote for the party which they think will do them the most good? Having the opposition's 200 baht in their pocket I'm sure will make them feel like they've done something for the cause.

The Golden Rule: "He who owns the gold, makes the rules.", and wins the elections to boot. Follow the money.

It is unethical to hijack a government and demand to be called prime minister. He reduced Thailand to one country, one vote.

LM is a huge problem, yes.

Defamation laws should be civil and not criminal code.

Generals are still the biggest problem... IMO....
