Nida Poll: Most people want corrupt politicians banished from politics for life

BANGKOK, 8 November 2015 (NNT) – 54.88 percent of the respondents agreed that corrupt politicians should be banished from politics for life, according to a Poll of the National Institute of Development Administration.

Altogether 1,250 individuals over 18 were polled regarding disallowing election candidates who are found guilty of corruption either in their duties or in election campaigning.

A majority of the respondents ( 54.88% ) agreed that corrupt politicians should not be allowed to return to politics ever again so that they don't have a chance to repeat the offences. Another 35.12 percent think they should be banned from elections for five years, while 5.68 percent are of the opinion that they should not be banned from elections at all.

Asked when politicians who are found guilty of corruption, should be banned from political participation, 51.82 per cent stated that it should start with those who were convicted of corruption in their duties. 45.42 percent stated that only those who are convicted after a new constitution is effective should be banned from the election.

As for the respondents’ opinions toward politicians who are convicted of election fraud, a majority of 61.68 percent indicated that they should be banned from standing for election for life. 31.28 percent stated that they should be banned from election for five years and 4.40 percent believe that they should not be banned from the election process at all.

And most people want the military to stay in their barracks and play with their guns, preferably aiming at each other.

But as we know.. you cant always get what you want!

50% of TVF members do as well.

The other 50% want the PTP back in power and left alone to continue where they left off. coffee1.gif

In the USA, corrupt politicians go to jail. ... But they can still be politicians.

See, we don't treat politicians different from other people. Corrupt businessmen can be tossed in the klink, too. And when they get out, they can still be businessmen...

Thailand, see how that works? Put corrupt people behind bars... Create a transparent society so that corrupt people cannot hide their stealing, and then prosecute them every time you find them - doesn't matter if they are rich and powerful, if they are politicians, or if they are generals. Send them up the river.

Because unlike the storyline from the Thai elites and their military muscle, corruption has ZERO to do with the form of government and is NOT unique to politicians.

I haven't seen that question asked in any of the recent polling. laugh.png

Actually, most of us want Thai people to have a say in who shall lead the country. Yes, I know; preposterous!

Most Thai people probably wonder why the heck people like you keep sticking their pointy noses into their affairs and speaking on their behalf.

Actually you are correct, for once. Most of us do want Thai people to have a say in who leads the country, even the TVF forum members who have been wrongly accused of being Junta lovers who want the Military to rule the country indefinitely.

But it would not be half as much fun for you if not for the imaginary Junta lovers. clap2.gif

So what, would you really put any aspect of the US 'democracy system' up as a good role model?

The poll really shows most people want the politicians they do not like banned for life.

Corruption on their team is perfectly okay.

Doesn't say that at all.

Just your usual silly and unsubsttiated twists and less then truthful.

Poll says corrupted politicians must be banned to run in election for life

201-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The majority of people throw support for the life banning of corrupted politicians from politics to prevent them from committing the same crime.

This was what the latest poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) revealed today.

NIDA said it asked a total of 1,250 people aged over 18 about banning politicians guilty of corruption in performing duties or in election campaign.

The majority of people asked, or 54.88% were of the same view that corrupted politicians must not be allowed to run in election for life so as to prevent them from committing the same crime if they re-elected.

The rest 35.12% supported five year ban, and 5.68% totally disagreed with the ban.

For politicians found guilty of corruption, they were asked if these politicians should be banned from political participation.

51.82% stated however that the ban should start with those who were convicted of corruption in performing their duties, while 45.42% said the election ban should be imposed only on those who are convicted of corruption after the new constitution takes effect.

For politicians who are convicted of election fraud, 61.68% viewed that they should be banned from running in election for life while 31.28% said they should be banned from election for five years.

Only 4.40% disagreed saying they should not be banned at all.

When you grow up enough to vote for those who will do the best for the country instead of who is going to put the most taxpayers money in your back pocket once they settle their nose into the trough, your idea might work.

Maybe if reforms can cut down the second option, you will think more about the first.

Last time you got that chance, you voted for some rich kid who was a pie-chart manager in her brothers business with no political knowledge or experience whatsoever. Once in power, she did precisely zero to help her country : she left everything to the dirty cronies underneath her. I wonder if you are proud of what you did there.

Well, in a country where a majority of people in past polls have said they are okay with corruption as long as it benefits them, I think FangFerang is pretty much dead on.

That said, I've never really understood (philosophically) the idea of banning someone from government service for X years. It's sort of like a time-out for children.

In other countries, pure shame would prevent you from ever holding public office again but . . . This is Thailand so really if you just promise enough free stuff once your penalty box period is up, you can get re-elected pretty easily.

Not to say that in my own country, the US, people have not bucked that trend and done jail time and then been elected back into public office, but it's fairly rare.

In Thailand it's like a professional wrestler waiting to get tagged back in.

you need to remove one "s".

most corrupt people in Thailand get away with it because the system is rigged in their favor. interestingly, most of the corrupt people in Thailand are not politicians, yet that is the narrow focus of corruption which this self-appointed "government" is using.

Let's compare, say, 500 MPs to 1700+ generals, for example... whistling.gif

yes I would, but we will need to do that off line as it's OT here.

I would also be happy to point out the current abuse of the system in the USA - it's not that different than Thailand.

But what does apply here, and what would be good for Thailand to consider, is that in the USA there are extremely, extremely few limits on who may run for office. There are no education qualifications, etc. this is a decent table that comes from the state of Maryland and a second key aspect of the US system is that we leave it up to the voters to make decisions.

And as always you deliberately try to totally divert the discussion, it's a s clear as a bell that you would be very happy to see the last gang of thieves have an open opportunity to regain total access to the trough.
