I haven't seen any mention of this, but sorry if it's been posted but I just didn't see it.

The cost to get a visa on arrival in Laos is now $35 as of October 1. The old price was $30. All the signs still say $30, but when you go to pay, the guy shows you a paper that says it's now $35. Imagine other fees may have increased also. Saw something that said $42, but he took the paper away from me too quickly before I got a chance to see what that was for.

This is an interesting development, thanks for filling us in. I did one on the 28th sept. and it was still $30. I can see why they have done though, the USD has slipped against the Thai Baht. $30 USD = 1,128 Baht but if you were to pay for your VOA in Baht it would cost 1,500 Baht. :o

The USD to KIP rate is still the same as it's been for quite a while...approx. 10,000 KIP to 1 USD. I think this was likely just a price increase and nothing to do with the USD vs. THB. Maybe someone else going can check to see if the price in THB has also increased.

This price increase is probably to make up for the fewer 30 day visa runs from Thailand now.

This will also hurt Cambodia. I suspect they will increase their VOA price soon as well.

The timing is too much of a coincidence.

precisely why i no longer go to lao, after half dozen visits and six months later i cant justify hanging out there at that stupid price.

dont forget the oppressive regime - especially targeting hmong. this money goes right into their pockets.

Looks like you were right my friend. I pinched this quote from another thread in the visa section. It was at Savannakhet, he had to pay $35 USD or 1,700 THB. You are still better off by 380 baht if you pay by USD should you have any. :D

P.S. At the Laos border they asked for the visa either US Dollars 35.- or THB 1700.

It was 1700 Baht at Chong Mek on 28 September - I've got the receipt someplace.

Plus the usual O/T payment of 100 for the chap who actually stamps you in.

Cheers,

Couthy.
