Fourteen dead as migrant boat sinks off Turkey’s Aegean coast

ANKARA: -- At least 14 people, including seven children, have died after their small boat sank off Turkey’s Aegean coast.

The fatalities are the latest in the ongoing migrant crisis.

As many as 40 people were on board the overladen vessel .

An eyewitness described what happened: “Around 40 to 50 migrants were brought to the port in a truck and they boarded the boat. I think the captain, a Syrian man, was inexperienced. The boat hit the rocks as they set sail and it sank shortly after.”

The Turkish coastguard rescued 27 and recovered the bodies of the drowned.

They were heading from Cannakale to the Greek island of Lesbos.

Authorities say after the boat hit the rocks they continued on until they took in so much water they had to turn back, but sank before reaching shore.

So, they were safe and in Turkey already..., but the lands of milk and honey are farther west.

They were heading for the cash. Greed kills.

Germany or die trying? "Migrants?????" Political correctness gone crazy! They will be calling shop burglars "after hours bargain hunters" next. And looters will become "new goods recycling experts."

You and others repeat this mantra time and again even though it is false. Turkey is currently not deemed as a "safe country" for refugees by accepted international protocol, nor by EU Interior Ministers..

and we must of course accept what is international protocol because we trust the politicians who designed it and especially EU ministers, who all know what is best for us.

No EU for Turkey then as it's 'not safe' anything to do with it being an Islamic country?

I think you're being deliberately obtuse.

As a component of the EU Interior Minister's review was the rise in terror attacks by the PKK, often described as a nationalist Marxist Leninist group. Unsafe country definition includes the lack of regulated legal process / protocols for the processing of refugee asylum claims, which is the case in Turkey. Although Turkey has invested significant monies supporting refugees an additional factor identified is UNHCR/NGO's support for refugees in Turkey and other regional countries being severely under funded and under resourced. Consequently in the last two years or so has led to the huge numbers of refugees seeking refuge elsewhere as they run out of money to support themselves to supplement UNHCR & NGOs efforts.

IMO most members of this forum have failed to recognise the issue of very poor policy by US/NATO and other regional balance powers that has led to the primarily Syrian refugee crisis currently challenging Europe and nearly always focus on 'blame the victim' i.e. refugees

Maybe a warning should be given to tourists to Turkey as it's too unsafe for 'asylum seekers' and economic migrants pretending to be Syrian? certainly always been unsafe for kurds. They cannot be admitted to the EU then until they are 'safe' - from what seems unclear.
