should we be concerned with what as been predicted? that next yr.a deadly heat wave could strike los.

as we have a double coated dog we are pondering where to put an air-con downstairs.

we have a 30ft.lounge,plus this leeds into a 24ft.kitchen all open plan.

we do have a gym room downstairs but it has a wooden door so with an air con it cant be left open, thus our boy cant come and go,unless we put in a glass door.

he does find the downstairs shower room with a fan ideal at the moment.

any thoughts.

A fan doesn't do anything for a dog. It cools us because it makes sweat evaporate. Dogs don't sweat.

Not sure what you mean by a glass door. Do you mean a dog flap? My dogs make it clear when they want to go out and come in. They stand by the door to go out, and paw it to come in.

You're right to be concerned about the heat. My partner's family's Alaskan Malamute over heated and sustained brain damage.

What kind of dog is it?........I remember as a kid we had two dogs, A dachshound and a mix med sized dog with a very long and thick coat......When it started getting real hot my Mom would have him sheared....he looked funny and the dachshound wouldhowl over the cutt but it really helped the dog.

Fans do no good to a dog, and I'm not sure aircons do, though my dogs certainly like them. As far as possible, dogs should be left with the climate as it is (no iced water, no fans), and their body will adapt as far as it can. Lots of shade, yes.

Some dogs are simply not suited to this climate, e.g. the St Bernard.

One local dog, on the other hand, the Bangkaew, has a double coat..... but he loves swimming.

That's what I always thought, but a Thai friend has a Pomeranian who always parks in front of a fan, either at home or when paying a visit to my place. He seems to feel more comfortable with it blowing on him.

Maybe the O/P's dog can get wet in the shower room or finds a tile floor cooler.

Local pet shops will do the necessary clipping to keep your dog cool as I do with my Persian every 2 months or so then he avoids the bathroom which is cool and resorts to taking up the bed again, reminds self to send wife to hairdresser tomorrow maybe I get the opposite reaction.

we HAVE taken care to try and keep him cool,a husky/malamute are used to living in temps.of minus 30upwards.

we tried him with a pool but as his coat is so thick and with a water proof layer he was coming into the house soaking wet.

we did get him clipped [after i swore i would never do that again] he got some terrible hot spots which took a long time to heal.

he does love going to bed 6-7pm.air con on,and believe it or not he will lay in front of the fan aswell.

the shower room is all tiled only a small window and complete shaded, but he does like the fan aswell.

one thing is he does spend most of the day indoors.

as for putting an air-con unit in the gym, but either a glass door so we can check on him or half/half.he does tell us when he wants to go out so maybe a door wood bottom and a thin glass top half.

another thought was a out swinging door as he always uses his nose to push open the security door if he is outside and wants to come in.

as its almost been a bad yr.for him we will do anything for him.our boy,he's all that me and mrs meat have,so what we can afford we will spend.if he's happy we are toooooooooooooooooooo.

thanks guys for your support.

A spokesman (for the Kennel Club) said: "The breed (Alaskan Malamute) does seem to be fashionable at the moment, which is something we really want to discourage". Daily Telegraph 15/11/2010

I'm sure that there are plenty of responsible dog enthusiasts in Alaska that would be happy to re-home your dog, in the climate for which it was bred.

That would make the dog happy.

Next time how about getting a dog which is less "fashionable" and more suited to the climate? Maybe one such as:

first of all before you condem us for picking such a wonderfull pall,he is a rescue dog, left with inexperianced relatives after the owner went away to work.

its obvious you dont read this forum often,if you did you would have read about him over 3yrs.ago when coming to us we saved his life, and he has never forgot,

repaying us with his loyalty love and affection.

so it would make me happy if you kept your advice to yourself

meatboy love me love my dog.

A fan is only as good as the room temperatures. All they do is circulate the air. If it`s hot the fan just ends up twirling the hot around.

What I do during the hot season is take a hand towel, soak it in a mixture of tap water and cold water from the water cooler and wipe the dog over with it once an hour. This helps a lot. Also dogs are smart, they will find the coolest areas. My dog enjoys lying under our bed during the day where it`s the coolest place in the house.

If you have aircon in a bedroom, leave it on and coax the dog into the room. It will soon learn that it`s the best place to be. Not forgetting to have a bowl of fresh cold water from the water cooler at hand.

i am sure his going to bed every night early 6pm-7pm,its because i switch the aircon on at about 6pm.and the circlateing fan,i go up with him an he is out like a light mostly on our bed.

the boss wants me to take him up to the bedroom during the day, only problem is there's no fridge, and if i do get one thats bad news for my drinking allowance.

he does drink alot[down to the medication he's taking, half cold from the fridge and half from the bottle.
