Suu Kyi demands calm transition to power

YANGON: Aung San Suu Kyi, chairperson of National League for Democracy (NLD), warned people to refrain from violence during her party's transition into power.

She told Radio Free Asia on November 12: "I want to thank the people. I feel encouraged by it and pay respect to the people. However, I want to warn people that it is not finished yet. People must control themselves during the next three months. Take heed of intentional instigations. Although we walk our path, we may encounter obstacles and enemies. But all need to face them in unison. It is important for us to reach our destination through unity and mutual understanding. I believe that the people have the ability to do that. I only want to say 'thank you very much'."

She said it was honourable and honest of the Union Solidarity and Development Party to admit defeat.

"We won the election because our hearts are very close. They cannot divide us from the people. The NLD was born from the people. People have expectations and dreams. We have been worked together for nearly 30 years," she said.

Suu Kyi said the administrative sector must now change.

"We cannot guarantee when the economy will develop or the health-care sector will be improved. We can say we will try to secure reform within a timeframe. We have plans but we need to form a government first," she said.

She said the cooperation of the present government was required and the Union Election Commission's duties must be completed first.
