Talks delegates in Vienna agree plan for Syria

Delegates at the multi-national talks on Syria taking place in Vienna say a broad timeline and plan for political transition towards elections in the war-torn country have been agreed.

The process is aimed at ending violence and replacing it with a political process to establish credible, inclusive and non-sectarian governance.

Participants agreed that elections should be held within 18 months.

“ We have reiterated that the future of Syria will be decided by Syrian people alone,” said Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov. “That also applies to the destiny of Bashar al-Assad and any other politician in that country.”

And it’s the future status of President Assad that could prove to be a stumbling block, along with the determination of which opposition groups are regarded as terrorists.

“But the situation is such that he has become the magnet for the foreign fighters,” US Secretary of State John Kerry said. “People are coming from all over the world attracted to Daesh or al-Nusra or whatever, but mostly Daesh, because of the fight against Assad. And that fight will continue. And the best way to solve this problem is for Bashar al-Assad to recognise that he could save his country by being part of this transition and allow all of the countries in the region to to defeat Daesh. That is the game plan.”

The delegates pledged to take all possible steps to ensure that they and those they support adhere to a ceasefire in Syria where an estmitated 250,000 people have died.

Our correspondent at the talks said they have inevitably been overshadowed by the events in Paris, but that participants emphasised that what happened in France only made it more pressing that they fight terrorism together and decisively.

In other words, they agreed that they can't agree, and that will further put their nose in other countries business.

Isis got those AK-47's they used in Paris from Uncle Sam? Sorry those are com-block weapons. Uncle Sam has M-16's and M-1's and so on just as other NATO countries do. Those AK's likely came from the ME or Russia or China or E. Europe as in former USSR countries.

Next.

It is you who is mistaken as hundreds of thousands of Assads friends, allies and supporters seek safe harbor in gullible western nations.

Its absurd to seek to impose/implement any solution on any place in the muslim world from, of all places, Vienna! I am each day convinced idiots advise Western leaders. Vienna? Are you kidding me? There is a reason September 11th was the date chosen for spectacular terrorism... 9/11! Buffoons.

What a goofball Kerry is? He has been outflanked by Lavrov yet again but still cannot get away from his stupid Assad must go comments.

'....State John Kerry said. “People are coming from all over the world attracted to Daesh or al-Nusra or whatever, but mostly Daesh, because of the fight against Assad.'

Here he is saying people are joining IS mostly because of the fight against Assad. Is he totally stupid or just a really poor liar?

Very true about the AK47s used in France. Perhaps the poster was referring to their ME cache that was supplied by US, also might want to see where the Toyotas all came from. US declassified papers describe ISIS as an asset, can it get much clearer? Even Tony Blair admits ISIS arose because of the Iraqi genocide. The information is out there if you choose to look for it.

I wonder what will happen if in the elections the Syrians vote for an islamic state ?

You'll have a country like Iran, Indonesia, Morocco, Egypt, Jordon and Turkey.

Certainly would be an improvement over the current government that engages in genocide of its own citizens.
