BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is now planning to make Klong Ong Arng canal a new venue by the city canal for people in Bangkok to launch their Krathong floats at the Loy Krathong festival scheduled on November 25.

This was revealed by the Bangkok deputy governor Pol Maj Gen Asawin Kwanmuang during an inspection trip Monday morning to follow up progress in the eviction of traders and dismantling of structures built on a 30-metre long stretch of the canal from Saphanhun to Saphanphanupong bridges.

The eviction and dismantling started on October 20 and took 28 days to finish.

The deputy governor said the dismantling of the iron structures built in the canal was almost completed with now the once heavily crowded stalls and signboards being cleared

The canal could now be seen with no eyesore and obstruction appeared, he said.

He said the BMA is now doing landscape of the pavements on the stretch and expected to make it a new venue for Loy Krathong celebrants to launch their candle floats on November 25.

He said water from the Chao Phraya river will be diverted to the canal to two metres deep so people could launch their floats.

Besides, the venue will be improved to be a new tourist attraction to preserve the canal culture of the residents, with night weekend market activities opening on Saturday and Sundays, he added.

This is what used to be Saphan Lek market, right?

I wouldn't want to flounder in that water by accident when floating my kratong, because it would mean my days were numbered.

"Besides, the venue will be improved to be a new tourist attraction to preserve the canal culture of the residents"

"The canal could now be seen with no eyesore and obstruction appeared, he said."

These 2 statements seem to contradict each other. Is he saying that by some miracle he has trained the residents not to throw all their rubbish and s**t straight into the canal???

"water from the Chao Phraya river will be diverted to the canal to two metres deep so people could launch their floats."

Just make sure to keep rice farmers away from the River so they can water their silly rice paddies. wai2.gif
