Chuvit warned by the court not to leave the country again without prior court's permission

BANGKOK: -- Rak Prathet Thai party leader Chuvit Kamolvisit was on Tuesday warned by the Bangkok South Criminal Court not to leave the country again without prior permission from the court.

Mr Chuvit reported himself to the court this morning after he left for the United States reportedly to visit his son without prior permission from the court in violation of the terms of his bail.

When queried by the court, the flamboyant politician admitted that it was his own misunderstanding and that he did not properly check the terms of his bail. He said he had no intention to defy the court and immediately reported himself to the court as soon as he returned from abroad.

The court gave Chuvit a warning not to leave the country again and notified the immigration police about the ban against Chuvit.

Mr Chuvit is on trial by the Supreme Court on charges of demolition of beer bars on his land on Sukhumvit road. A verdict is scheduled to be read on January 28. Both the Criminal Court and Appeals Court found him guilty and sentenced him to imprisonment.

A misunderstanding, yes of course.and nobody, including the court, explained the bail conditions to him ? I am presuming he was legally represented.

Contempt of Court but only a minor rebuke, little wonder certain people here believe they can do as they like.

As an MP he probably has one of those fancy red passports- giving him carte blanche in most countries.

If the terms of his bail were such that he was not supposed to leave the country, why didn't they confiscate his passport?

Ummm, when you violate the terms of bail, your bail is supposed to be revoked. Why isn't Chuvit in jail right now? Amazing how the rich and powerful are always excepted from the proper application of the law.

So what sense does it make that one is warned not to leave the country without court permission, while it is obvious that same as with any other law in Thailand, there is nobody to enforce what the court instructs?

After thinking about it, I figured out the answer to my own question.

It is obvious now that they do not confiscate passports from rich people so that they have the option of doing a runner and going somewhere to live in "self imposed exile."

Shouldn't his passport been seized as well?

Most don't do a runner....why should do.....count how many rich people sit in jail in Thailand? They known they won't go into jail....the cases can be drag out till they die from old age (Samak)

Forty years ago I was using computers to send material all over the world. Today in Thailand, 40 years later when my mobile can do the same thing, the courts are unable to send a simple message to all immigration points listing those on travel bans.

Put Mr Arrogance behind bars where he belongs with the other criminals (or at least the 50% of inmates who are genuinely convicted criminals).

Samak die from liver cancer at the age of 74; not old age. Sad end to a nice guy who fell victim to the anti-democrat conspiracy.

Nice guy?? Not.

Are you aware of his involvement in the 6 October 1976 Massacre at Thammasat University?

Samak had played a crucial role in instigating the violence that ensued against the protestors, whom he considered to be disloyal communists.

Surely Mr Loh had his tongue in cheek when he wrote that. If not he has no concept of democracy if he does not understand what happened to those poor students..

Great character, should be PM!

Well, it would probably be an improvement on what we have today. At least the RTP would be shaking in their pants instead of the lottery vendors.

He should have a dark blue passport as the red passports are for the royal family, diplomats and ministers, not to a normal MP.

Not even my so called "high-so" friends have red passports and these people are Thais spending up to 12 months a year outside Thailand for their work for the Thai government, one at UN in New York and one at Pentagon.

Thai politics has no real characters, Chuvit is the only one, Legend!!!!!!!

74 is old and court case was finished years after he died and he could have dragged it out even more......

Nice guy? 1976??? Corrupt without doubt proofed by courts.

He should have been his last 10 years in jail....

AFAICT, the courts here almost never seize Thai defendants' passports, even in the most serious criminal cases. It does indeed seem they literally want to leave the door open so the birds can fly away.

Now, if you're a foreigner facing criminal charges, AFAICT, then it's an entirely different story.
