Yingluck changes strategies with the political seasons

ATTAYUTH BOOTSRIPOOM

BANGKOK: -- "I AM not in a position to demand anything - even justice - because everything goes according to what this government wants. The government must decide what the public stands to gain from ordering me to pay civil liability."

These are the strongest remarks Yingluck Shinawatra has made since May, 2014, when the military staged a coup to bring down her government.

Reading between the lines, the former prime minister is trying to say that if she is found guilty, it will not be in accordance with the justice system, but rather what the government wants. She made the claim despite her own observations that the government wanted to avoid a hefty court fee by pushing her to petition the court to appeal the tentative order to make her pay compensation for civil liability over the rice pledging scheme.

Yingluck had been keeping a low profile, even when travelling to the court for a criminal trial for gross negligence over the rice subsidy scheme that allegedly resulted in massive damage to the state.

Yingluck chose a softer approach by pleading for justice - but she changed her stance after the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha opted to issue an administrative order to make her pay for civil liability incurred from the rice-pledging scheme, which is said to be up to Bt500 billion.

From then on, Yingluck has fought tooth and nail by having her legal team argue via the media that resorting to civil liability was not fair because the Supreme Court had just started the criminal trial and she was not yet convicted of any offences.

What interests the public now is what political manoeuvres Yingluck will resort to from now on. She has created a high profile by keeping herself in the media spotlight daily, but then she realised that making newspaper headlines and sparking front-page stories did not change the negative force she was facing.

But she also knows that keeping "cool under pressure" will not stop people in power from "going after her" because they believe her actions caused massive damage to the country, which gave them legitimacy to press for her speedy prosecution.

Some top politicians had earlier thought they could negotiate with people in power to be lenient with Yingluck in the name of reconciliation. This notion has proven to be just too dim a hope.

The Pheu Thai camp has realised they are dealing with a government with absolute control, which means it can exercise its power to block all political movements and order all state officials to toe the government line.

Political leaders have been summoned to have their "attitudes adjusted" if they cry foul.

What Yingluck supporters can do now in this battle is to win the hearts of the masses, which is difficult because no politicians have stood up to 'fight for the people" or "side with the people" since the coup was staged.

What Yingluck's camp can do is to claim that the rice-pledging scheme was implemented to help poor farmers. A case in point is red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikua's call for the people to write essays entitled "The day that there is no rice-pledging scheme".

Last but not least is Yingluck's remark: "This is a historic case that is imprinted in [her] heart and in the people's hearts as this will be the norm that is used against future PMs who implement policies to help people.''

Not yielding to negotiation with people in power - but winning the hearts of the masses is Yingluck 's strategy to survive the political storm. But critics may wonder if "her pleading for the public support is too late".

Sounds like little missy doesn't like it when she cannot control everything and justice is finally breathing down her pitiful spineless neck.

A little cross section of justice over a couple of months under Prayut's government this year.

12th of January - The Election Commissioner (EC) on Wednesday decided to throw out several complaints made against alleged election misconducts by former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra during the most recent general election in February, 2014. Of course yingluck was happy with the justice system here. It suited her agenda.

13th of January - The Administrative Court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit filed by 28 Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom residents against former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra in which they demanded compensation for damages from alleged mismanagement of floodwaters by her government in 2011. Of course yingluck was happy with the justice system here. It suited her agenda.

21st of January - Former Pheu Thai MP Karoon Hosakul was granted bail after he was found guilty of defaming former Democrat MP Taenkhun Chit-isara

22nd of January - The Criminal Court on Thursday acquitted two former ministers and a member of the Pheu Thai party of defamation charges lodged against them by former finance minister Korn Chatikavanich

27th of January - Jatuporn bailed after receiving a two year jail sentence for defaming a former premier in comments made in 2009.

10th of March - Maj Gen Chamlong Srimuang, Sonthi Limthongkul and eight other leading members of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) were on Tuesday indicted by the prosecution in the Dusit District Court for staging a rally in 2011 over the Preah Vihear temple dispute

24th of March - The Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced a Democrat MP and his wife to 17 years in jail for appropriating and possessing state land in Kanchanaburi province without permission.

25th of March - Yingluck has been cleared of any wrongdoing for her trips to the northern and northeastern provinces in 2014.

26th of March - The Criminal Court today dropped a libel suit filed against the former chief of the DSI, Tarit over the construction of police stations nationwide.

All of thee cases finding the PTP or reds innocent while Demq's were found guilty. The list goes on and on and on. yingluck has a selective memory. Justice is served when it suits her agenda.

"because everything goes according to what this government wants"

Ironically the shoe is on the other foot now. Maybe yingluck can understand how the majority felt under her "Democratic" government.

The EC told the previous govt not to hold elections on 2 Feb because they will fail. The previous government didn't listen. The previous government got what they wanted.

IMF told the previous government to stop rice scheme otherwise it will fail. The previous government didn't listen. The previous government got what they wanted.

DEM's told the previous government to stop amnesty otherwise it will fail. The previous government didn't listen. The previous government got what they wanted.

The constitution dictated the previous government should have stopped the 2.2 trillion baht infrastructure loan. The previous government didn't listen. The previous government got what they wanted.

Democracy demanded that water hearings be held and transparent. The previous government didn't listen. The previous government got what they wanted.

So everything seemed to go according to what the previous government wanted and under this government the majority of court cases ruled in favour of reds and PTP ministers.

yingluck is reminiscent of a cockroach that is cornered and about to face the toxic spray of accountability. In her death throws she is spewing anything to win this public support hoping that support has selective memories or short term memories, but unless she is able to bribe them again with unsustainable policy then I cannot see that strategy working. Public support does not mean you are innocent. It means you are popular. Unless your a PTP supporter.

Going by yinglucks last FB post with 190 000 "likes" compared to Abhisit's with 2100 "likes" that will certainly reinforce to the PTP supporters that yingluck is way more "innocent" that Abhisit is!!

well just like when PT were in office - you abused everything and then some

and what the public stands to gain is - 600 billion baht of their money back, the fact you have the ability to pay speaks loud enough for me

Now once you have compensated the Thai people for your stupidity and greed you can --- of to Dubai and join your evil brother

The yingluck haters

I don't understand how people are so easily taken in by this queen of liars and cheats. She may or may not be Thaksin's sister, but whatever she is, she is not worthy of being worshiped like some posters think around here!

Living in the North it amazes me that ordinary people here, some of who originated from BKK cannot see any wrong in the Shin family, no matter what is said. The question is with all the spin and lies that have been bantered around, who is one to believe. Jury is out for me on that one. One thing is certain, military rule without opposition never benefits any nation, only those who hold the power., you only have to look at history to see that. Some say true democracy will never work in Asia, I wonder why.

"A case in point is red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikua's call for the people to write essays entitled "The day that there is no rice-pledging scheme". Really, I am sure he means get the red shirts to write it for them seeing a great deal cannot write due to their lack of education and then just get them to make their mark. While some farmers may still support her a lot have seen the truth as witnessed with their march on Bangkok to protest against her and her lack of payment. The scheme never made any poor farmers richer and yl never over saw it at all as she promised to do, she was too busy shopping her way around the world to care about the poor farmers. The time for the shins to pay for all their corrupt practices is finally here and we can hear yl screaming like a banshee about it as the thought of losing any of her wealth is terrifying her, couldnt happen to a more deserving woman than this shrew, roll on justice.

The lady has really missed her calling, she should be included in cast on some of the Thai soaps. Of course with her apparent lack of memory, inability to adlib a situation, etc there would probably not be much call for a deaf, mute.

Maybe a silent movie of ''Cinderalla, the ugly sister and the whole family could get on payroll to pay back some of what they pillifered from the country store.

Right on cue, at 07:40hrs and possibly before coffee and the early morning ablution.

How depressingly predictable this forum has become.

"Hunt witch, get rich", might be an appropriate slogan for what is happening.

Perhaps you could take your own advice by getting a new perspective. being observant as you claim, you should also note that the paid Yingluck supporters obviously didn't get their cheque this week as the weren't any of the apologists on this subject. The "same predictable tripe" as you call it can't change as the truth cannot change,

Start your argument with a lie and you've lost it already.

The elections failed because:

a) They were held during mass protests and with the capital city under emergency law. People would die and they knew it - but they needed an excuse to cling to power whilst still sending their terrorists to murder protesters.

B) There was no opposition.

c) Despite all that and over 90% of polling booths open, they still only polled around 30%.

Decent people had had enough. What about you ?.

"Maybe yingluck can understand how the majority felt under her "Democratic" government."

You mean the majority who voted her government into power?

"The EC told the previous govt not to hold elections on 2 Feb because they will fail."

And exactly why did the elections fail? Why aren't elections being held today Mr djjamie when the fair and scientifically astute Dusit polls tell us that Uncle Too enjoys an overwhelming support among the population he so gracefully relived of the troublesome burden to vote?

"You mean the majority who voted her government into power?"

"The elections failed because:

John, I know you have a very selective memory but the protests were (according to your good friend Suthep) orchestrated by himself in collusion with the "PM" as an excuse for the coup. You also have forgotten which side physically blocked people from voting booths because they disapproved of the choice made again and again by the majority of the electorate, John.

"b) There was no opposition."

Don't know what that means, John - doesn't make sense.

"c) Despite all that and over 90% of polling booths open, they still only polled around 30%."

Don't know where you get the numbers from, John. As usual what you present as "facts" are more than a little suspect.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. The people of Thailand should have been allowed to vote and, if they so chose, to oust YL in a legal and constitutional manner and not with the barrel of a gun. Simple as that, John.

"Decent people had had enough. What about you ?"

Please re-read my comment above, and slowly this time.

The only difference between her and the military is that while she's a relative newcomer they have been screwing the taxpayers for decades and they're not subject to any oversight.

Slightly off topic but I'd like to see her modeling Victoria Secrets latest line and Prayuts cabinet dressed as the Village People. Then I could take them all a bit more seriously

'What Yingluck supporters can do now in this battle is to win the hearts of the masses ...' These being the same masses that did benefit from a scheme that had far too much in common with the old EEC agricultural subsidies scheme? The same ones that, at the end of the day, were struggling to get paid anything? Or those that benefitted not at all, but did fund the subsidies from their taxes?

'What Yingluck's camp can do is to claim that the rice-pledging scheme was implemented to help poor farmers.' To the tune of some B600bn?
'... this will be the norm that is used against future PMs who implement policies to help people.''' Let's be frank: Yingluck never had the wherewithal to implement anything of her own volition. But when you accept your brother's proposal to act as his proxy (clone), you accept the responsibility for the actions of the whole cabinet, corruption and all. The time to have acted was when things were obviously going pear shaped, such as when an idiotic commerce minister claimed national security concerns as justification for not revealing details of a (non-existent) G-to-G deal.
