PHUKET: The plan to construct the controversial Nai Harn Movie Museum was dashed at a public meeting last night, confirmed Rawai Mayor Aroon Solos.

"We of course listened to what the community had to say," Mr Aroon told the Phuket Gazette.

Mr Aroon explained that after the public hearing, it was clear that a new location would need to be found for the 40-million-baht facility.

"Though I was not able to attend the meeting, I understand that the consensuses was that the community did not want the project to move forward, despite it having already been approved," said Santi Pawai, director of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Phuket Office. "I now have to meet with the Department of Tourism on Monday to explain why the project will not go ahead."

100 people, including 40 expats voted. Expats' opinion / votes don't count, as is the Thai way.

60 locals voted against the temporary 'movie museum' so the plan is axed! What a load of nonsense. What about the 500000 people that didn't vote.

Impossible to take any 'Phuket news' seriously. Anybody else feel insulted with this constant stream of garbage?

So finally officials are asking for opinions of the local residents, and the signs are encouraging that they're listening to those local opinions, and you have a problem with that?

It is the way it works here. Less than that number of people stopped any idea of an overpass at the notorious U turn on Thepkasatri Rd. A single person placed a water tank on the road extension from the circle to Rawai creating a traffic hazard yet it took a couple of years to resolve. BTW the majority of Phuketians probably do not give a monkey's about a Hollywood museum spoiling Nai Harn beach as any benefits will only be a for a select few.

You are entitled to your opinion & if you are happy to have a building blighting the beachfront then so be it. Did you attend the meeting to voice your support for the project?

Those attending the meeting did so to express their view against. You cannot cancel a legally binding contract because of a show of hands by a partisan crowd of 60.

Surely the story is....The opinion of tourists and expats is not welcome. Give us your money and sod off.

That area in Nai Harn is a mess and those trees are ten a penny. Perhaps that's why 299,940 Phuket residents couldn't care less.

The retailer of water storage containers claimed the piece of land was his. Directly outside of his store. Not so sure his actions were a protest against widening the road. As you clam. Which isn't Thapkasatri Rd BTW.

Feel free to read Valentine's post again about which road was causing a problem with a particular "landowner" blocking the road, HINT, he didn't say Theprkasatri.

BTW, why are you so bitter at the outcome of this senseless project which would be better served at the white elephant location close to the Sarasin Bridge?

I'm not certain if I like the title to this thread as claiming the locals were "victorious" seems a bit.......sorry at a loss for the word......over the top anyway. But I guess thats journalism.

Lets just hope the opinions of some of the foreigners who may (or may not) be a bit more educated than the people making the decisions here, led those people to think on it a little more. Typically it's sod off we're taking the cash, so there is a positive here.

Anyway, so many better places to put it and yes, as Steelpulse posted they already have quite a nice building for it up by Sarasin Bridge.
