Russia to help Cambodia build capacity for nuclear power

Russia will help Cambodia work towards building a nuclear power plant under an agreement the two countries signed this week, said Sergei Kirienko, the head of state nuclear firm Rosatom.

Cambodia depends heavily on imported fuel and power. Electricity in the country is among the most expensive in Southeast Asia and a common source of complaint from investors.

"The Cambodian government is mulling, in future, a nuclear power station construction," Kirienko told reporters on Wednesday when asked about the agreement.

Cambodian energy officials declined to comment on the deal on Thursday.

The agreement was signed during a visit by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to Cambodia this week. His visit was the first to Cambodia by a senior Russian politician since 1986.

Under the terms of the agreement, Russia will provide expertise, research and training to Cambodia.

"Perhaps, it is better to begin with a research reactor and a research center in Cambodia," Kirienko said, noting that Russia has concluded a similar agreement with Bolivia.

Economic cooperation is fine. Building a nuclear power plant in a country that can't even maintain it's roads properly is a recipe for disaster. Russia created the largest nuclear disaster in the history of the world, and others will be paying the price of it for many years to come.

Thirty-five years ago Kampuchia, now Cambodia, was emerging from a fratricidal genocide that killed a quarter of the population. Now the Russians, always ones to put safety first, apparently think those same people can maintain and administer a nuclear facility?

Which way does the prevailing wind blow in Thailand?

Did any other country offer them to help build? Didnt think so since they all complain about the regime and to help them they need to do this and that and there we go again. Demands. Not all countries wants to be somebodies dog. And i think you shouldnt defend usa and theirs interest all over the world haha. There i think russia is a noob and have been very inactive. But after sanctions etc they realized its time to expand their interests.

Vietnam is already planning nuclear energy projects. Given Thailand's lack of energy security and industralization, it makes sense for Thailand to pursue nuclear energy if only to keep pace with Cambodia and Vietnam. Not to do so would mean a loss of face for the Junta. Nuclear power would also be appropriate to the Junta's 20-year economic security plan.

So it's likely that within a year Thailand will solicit and be offered a partnership for development of a nuclear power plant by numerous providers such as China, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, Japan, Pakistan, India and France.

Nuclear energy has been part of Thailand's energy security plan since 2007 as envisioned by EGAT. The Yingluck regime projected 11% of Thailand's energy would be nuclear by 2030. However, to date Thailand's nuclear energy aspirations have been stalled by public resistance. Malaysia has had a similiar experience. The Junta might be able to overcome public resistance with minimal effort.

Really ?. I got the impression they are the ones kicking ass. Where do you get your news ?.

Russians are hard nosed and ruthless. If they want to do it, they will and don't care what anybody says. That's what is needed against Muslim terrorists : you can be sure none of them will get taxpayers legal aid in Russia to pursue murder charges against soldiers.

But they are a danger to the rest of the world otherwise. They will build this reactor if they want no matter what anybody else says. And you can be sure all the materials will be substandard. It will be a disaster waiting to happen in 10 or 20 years.

It hardly matters anymore , Fukushima has been poisoning the ocean and air unabated for the last 5 years , we will all be glowing soon, your food now contains cesium and god knows whats in the air, but you cant see it or smell it and the mass media wont report it .Governments the world over would rather have us die without the panic and social unrest.
