Russia hits Turkey with economic sanctions, warns more could follow

PARIS: -- Russia has hit Turkey with economic retaliation following the fatal downings of two Russian aircraft on Tuesday.

Some 15% of all food imports to Russia will be subjected to stricter tests, direct flights could be scaled back and Russians have been told to leave Turkey. Outright restrictions on food imports could follow.

A battery of economic measures are being talked about including high-profile big-money developments. The Russian tourist federation says it has ceased co-operation.

“The government’s been instructed to work out a set of economic and humanitarian measures to react to this act of aggression,” said Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Turkey’s main land border route for Russian trade is through Georgia, but Turkish goods are backing up there as the Russians refuse to let them in.

Caught in the middle are the Georgian authorities and the drivers.

“It is because of the plane which was shot down, you can see here there are trucks from Kazakhstan, Georgia, Turkey and Kyrgyzstan but all of them have Turkish cargo and all have been stopped,” said one local driver.

Meanwhile in Moscow a shrine has spontaneously appeared in the centre of the capital to honour the two fallen airmen.

Both men have been posthumously decorated, the jet pilot with the country’s highest honour, the title Hero Of Russia.

Putin is so angry that he joined the US led coalition, which means Turkey might not shoot em down next time.

Basically says Putin "Respects the US Led Coalition" and that it is in their interest to join.

Shocking!

"We view the U.S.-led coalition with respect and stand ready to cooperate with it," Putin said. "We believe that we would better create a single, united coalition as it would be easier, simpler and more efficient to coordinate our work that way."

This should have happened before their first airstrike. Would have made things a lot easier.

Economic sanctions by Russia is the way to go.

1) Turkey tourists entering Russia have been refused entry into Russia and deported back to Turkey.

2) Turkish products are not entering Russia and are rotting at the border.

3) All Russian tour packages to Turkey has been suspended.

4) Russia also made clear that Turkey will not be part of the coalition which means Turkey will be isolated.

5) Russia is now targeting the Gray Wolves, Al Nusrah and ISIS.

A lot of pro Kurdish articles are now in the Russian media, so it is just a matter of time before the Kurds in Iraq and Syria will have their little Kurdistan. Germany is supplying already weapons to the Kurds in Iraq so Russia might join in as well.

One can make the argument that an independent Kurdistan is far more important to the long term stability of the region than say an independent Palestinian state.

So 'Webfact' says: Both men have been posthumously decorated, the jet pilot with the country’s highest honour, the title Hero Of Russia.

What about the actual fact that it was only the pilot who was killed. The WSO was picked up and taken home! Hardly posthumous . . .

This is going to cost Erdogan very dear indeed. The rhetoric from NATO has been very muted indeed which means that in private he has little support and NATO know he is a maverick that they cannot trust. This will cost him economically with empty hotel rooms in Turkey. And it will cost him as Russia ramps up the airstrikes on the Turkmen Takfiris in Northern Syria, causing discontent in Turkey as ethnic Turks are cannot be protected. Not shown in today's western news is that yesterday Russia attacked the border in Idlib province and bombed a convoy of vehicles which drove into Syria loaded with weapons to resupply the FSA/Takfiris in northern Latakia. Note that a news paper editor is in court today for exposing the arms trade from Turkey to terrorists (also not in the Western media)

But the biggest issue is that Putin has publicly called Erdodan out on the issue ISIS of oil sales. This is an issue that even the most wilfully blind can understand and cannot be covered up with propaganda as it is so simple to understand it...you can almost hear support for Turkey ebbing away as ordinary people start to realise that Erdogan and Turkey are traitorous snakes secretly supporting IS and funding them. Expect the flow of jihadis through Turkey to stop as well as pressure is applied to them via the EU.

Will Turkey get some public lukewarm support? Yes, the EU needs him to deal with their refugee crisis but the EU also want a bone fide effort against IS which the Saudi/Qatar/US/Turkey coalition is unwilling to supply. Expect to some splits in the grand coalition if there are more terror attacks on European soil as the EU decide that they will not stand for the double dealing of the US coalition.

Interesting, but one should hold off on the gloating. The deploying of the Russian missiles is dangerous for the allies as it could be just a matter of time before one accidently brings down a coalition jet.

I just wish all of the governments were more honest. Russia isn't so far off the mark with its support of Assad. Until there is a military coup or someone else, the loss of Assad could result in another Libya or Somalia. Israel could have dusted Assad years ago, but didn't. They know that there isn't an alternative. Turkey could have dusted Assad last year before Russia deployed, but it didn't. The Gulf states could have done the same. And yet we are treated to the empty rhetoric about removing Assad.

The west says not to attack the opponents of ISIL who also oppose Assad, but it also knows that many of them are aligned with groups who are just as bad as ISIL. These forces are locked in battle with Hizbollah the Iranian funded proxy army, who once they are done in Syria will eventually attack Israel and perhaps Jordan. And then there are the Kurds. Persecuted and denied their freedom. How the dominant arab ethnic groups hate them, and how the Turks and Iranians despise them. Given to a less doctrinaire interpretation of Islam and more accepting of women, gays, and other religious groups they are everything the religious zealots hate. The Kurds have been the only group who have had success against ISIL and once done with them will turn their sights to reclaiming their ancient homeland that overlaps into Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran.

And now we have the dance of fakery, the speeches of duplicity and the war of proxy armies. These governments know who the enemy is and they are going to have to make some tough decisions because this will only get worse. Sadly, millions in the region may die until there is some honesty.

More Russian food bans are a great opportunity for the Junta!

When Russia imposed food import sanctions against the EU over the Ukranian conflict, Thailand rushed to fill the void with rice, seafood, chicken and pork.

I expect the Junta will be called upon by Putin to again to help support Russia's foreign policies.

Just please, insist on USD's and not rubles for payment.

One could make a much better argument that Israel's refusal to permit the creation of a Palestinian state and that the Jewish lobby AIPAC in the US and BDBJ in the UK have dominated US/UK foreign policy in the Middle East so badly that we now find our selves in a never ending war on terror. All for the benefit of Israel.

It must drive you batty knowing that the Kurds have historically lived in harmony with jews. Everytime we are treated to revisionist lies claiming that the "arabs" have protected and gotten along with jews before modern Israel was in place, it is an insult to the Kurds. The truth is that the only muslims who lived in harmony with jews and Christians alike were Kurds. It must upset you to see the Russians making nice to the Kurds. Good. If the Kurds are smart they will ask for help from the Russians, as the west has certainly not done much to help them as they suffered persecution at the hands of the Iranians and the Turks. It's the Kurds who are taking the fight to ISIL while the west's backing of the useless and cowardly Iraqi army is a failure. If Russia really wants to take charge of the agenda in the region, all it has to do is to embrace the Kurdish people and sit back and watch Turkey crap itself. Russia may find itself being supported by countries such as Germany who have not been to supportive of Putin lately.

Russia torched the oil trucks from ISIS (who is the owner of the trucks?) who make business with Erdogans son.

Russia (or someone) shot supply trucks for the ISIS coming from Turkey. That are Economic sanctions direct at Erdogans family....
