We called them P38's coz they were only half a car.

Actually the V8 manual went like a rocket.

Yep I had one ~25 years ago so I heard the P38 line many, many times.

That was one car that was all substance and no style, definitely not purchased for the image.

It was also the final Nail in Leyland Australia's coffin.

We used to buy brand new 4.4's in a crate and put them in early Range Rovers. A Holley and Headers and they went really well.

Leyland of Australia produced a 4,416 cc (269.5 cu in) version of the aluminium V8 for their Australia-only 1973 Leyland P76. The bore was 88.9 mm (3.50 in) and the stroke was 88.9 mm (3.50 in), making it a square engine. The block deck height was extended and longer conrods were fitted 158.75 mm (6.250 in) between centres. This rare engine produced 200 hp (149 kW) and 280 ft•lbf (380 N•m) and, although export (to the UK) versions were planned, the closure by British Leyland of their Australian operations in 1975 precluded the widespread application of this engine. British Leyland did import one complete P76 engine for assessment but it was never fitted to a vehicle and was sold off on the demise of the company.

Yes it was a 4.4L 270 cu version of the Rover 3.5L.

A lot of minor differences though.

Standard 2 Barrel Stromberg and restrictive exhaust.

Basically tuned for torque like a truck engine.

As Woodsie said, a better carb and extractors made them a good, light power plant.

Gotta keep the right coolant in them though.

What else was there in the price range.........?

What was the "flop" element of the rotary engine and the still in production Prius?

The Rover was a prototype that never went into production so again hardly a flop. Do all the other prototype or experimental cars ever made by every manufacturer count as flops also?

You might want to clarify what you call a flop, most would think something that didn't sell well or had a very short production run.

The Corvair, as unconventional as it was, sold nearly 2 million cars over 10 years.

They used to market a kit in N. America for these cars. Tube chassis front and rear, install a small block Chevy midships.

Quite good performance, and nicely balanced.

Fine Post canthai 55. As T.A said it sold well. But as usual the Bean Counters stopped development of the rear suspension.Refined a bit more, a non flop.!!. It was fun at 16 Y.O on dirt roads as it stood.thumbsup.gif

Wasn't it the Alegrot that had a 'squarish' steering wheel? I think Audi tried to copy that particular design feature on one of its models recently.
