BANGKOK: -- TWO leaders of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) were detained on Monday because their action was aimed at causing public confusion instead of checking on corruption as claimed, Government Spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday.

UDD leaders Jatuporn Promphan and Nuttawut Saikuar were detained while they were planning to go to the Rajabhakti Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan province purportedly to check on alleged graft in the construction of the park.

Sansern said that though the park was not a restricted area, the duo did not really have the authority to check on corruption allegations there. "If they really wanted to check on the alleged corruption, they should have looked at the documents. Their action instead was deemed as instigating chaos and public confusion as agencies checking on the project have not reported any graft," he said.

He said the government had to stop the two from going to the park, because there were people who disagree with the red-shirt leaders and it is believed they were planning a confrontation.

"We did not want the conflict to escalate into violence, and have taken the two in to ask for cooperation to not stage such activities," he said.

Nuttawut and Jatuporn were released on Monday night.

Meanwhile, sources from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) said the two were detained at a military camp in Kanchanaburi province. After eating with the red-shirt leaders, the security officials spent about two hours talking to them. After that, the officials decided not to press charges as the duo were willing to cooperate. The Criminal Court had previously banned them from staging any political activities as a bail condition.

The red-shirt leaders were released after signing a document stating that they had been released and that they had been taken care of while in detention, that they were not assaulted, tortured or forced to sign any unfair contracts. The statement also had them promise that they would not stage any political rallies, create conflicts or disturb peace.

If they violate the contract, they stand to face legal action with their financial transactions suspended.

Army spokesman and NCPO spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvari said Army chief General Theerachai Nakawanich would ensure security this month, when His Majesty's birthday will be marked. The Army chief has called on all state agencies to support events this month and security officials have been told to ensure there is no trouble so this is a "month of happiness" for all.

Now all they have to do is round up all of the Muslim trouble maker in the deep south ( who make the red shits and similar groups look like amatures) and make them sign simmilar more strict contracts enphasisning, the suspension/confication of financials/property.

what's the best place to talk about request for park's documents than in their offices in the park? Army commander gen udomdej has admitted publicly that rampant corruption has taken place under his watch in the park, just nobody dares to do anything about it. 100m are gone into deep army pockets.

those 2 were trying to dig the papers up.

how 2 people surrended by armed military were going to stage a confrontation?

These guys are back on Redshirt TV channels already giving speeches....wife watching one of them right now on one of their several satellite TV channels talking about their detention the other day...live. He talking things such as why don't you pick up the monk and his group who was protesting the other day.

The govt made a mistake in picking these guys up, holding them briefly, and then releasing them...it just added to their popularity. Current govt sure seems to keep stepping into it (repeatedly) .

Obviously no one can be allowed to simply travel freely if other people disagree with them.

Elections will be held only when everyone in Thailand agrees.. Suan Dusit is going to ready a new poll.

I wonder what Thai people think when they read this story.

Red shirts going to draw attention to obvious corruption among the army.

And they get arrested and told not to spread confusion? How long until everyone notices that the emporers have no clothes?

Maybe they will think it ironic that two appointed non democratic unusually rich leaders, proven liars, are trying to accuse other self appointed non democratic but currently in power leaders of pocketing money illegally.

It's like the Mafia complaining about police corruption,

Thailand - Amazing, but not necessarily in a positive way.

I often think it's because Thais talk about themselves in the third person.

They talk about people others being corrupt whilst everyone knows they too are corrupt.

I wonder if they are any good at venn diagrams..

"If they really wanted to check on the alleged corruption, they should have looked at the documents."

Does this only apply to the park? If someone wanted to investigate suspicions of corruption among inexplicably wealthy leaders, could they look at documents pertaining to land sales and money transfers?

Diversion only, get back to the point.

Diversion? I thought that was the point... could these guys, or anyone for that matter, have a look at documents to investigate this case of corruption, or any other case, as the representative from the self-appointed government claims in the OP... I think not.

or am I confused? Dang, those nasty red shirts did it again! whistling.gif
