BANGKOK -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha confirmed on Thursday that the rail project between Thailand and China has not collapsed but will go on.

But the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries on railway development project due on Friday has been temporarily shelved after China failed to honour an associated agreement on rubber which was included in the same package.

It was initially agreed by both sides that China would buy rubber from the Buffet Stock which includes both old and new rubber. However, China later had a second thought and would buy only new rubber.

The prime minister said that the failure of the rail project would affect the good relations between Thailand and China and, therefore, talks on the project would continue until the project is realized which will be a symbol of 40 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

He suggested that any issues which could not be resolved should be temporarily put off and the two sides should move on with the other issues related to the project.

The prime minister pointed out that there are more issues related to the project than just the contentious interest rate issue. He maintained that negotiations of the project should be based on give and take “for instance, if they cannot reduce the interest rate but they agree to buy rubber from us, that should be taken into consideration.”

"He maintained that negotiations of the project should be based on give and take"

The first rule of negotiation is "Be able to walk away from the deal!"

Prayut has painted himself into an economic corner where he can no longer negotiate as an equal. He needs this project to showcase the junta's economic leadership and now will do anything to make the deal work. And BFF China will use that desperation to its advantage.

Can you imagine the Thai military adopting a "give and take" attitude in peace negotiations with the Malay-Thai insurgents? Or with the Yingluck regime? With the PTP? In military paralance, "give and take" amounts to a psychological surrender. It looks like a new experience for the junta.

This thread is now outdated by the todays news that China has walked away from the table of discussions regarding both rubber and railroads!

The kicker being that they cited "Thai ethical practices" as being of concern!

"Thai ethical practices"

I have not heard of these...could someone tell me what they are?

My experience with Chinese is that they are very hard negotiators. They will take no bullshit from anyone. Normally they are looking a bit bigger profit margin than Thais but can also deliver.

If they smell a rat than it is goodbye. I can imagine Thais trying to sell them old rubber and some other old stock that is worth not a toss.

They are deluded but that we knew already.

The Chinese and Americans are very sensitive now to dealing with those with "unclean hands" The Japanese however, are as usual playing the long-game. Very tense times for usurpers of power in Thailand. Must be tough to deal in the real-world and with the big-boys! The EU will be the coup de grace nail in the coffin of these children of priveldge and brotherhood.

Still alive - just not kicking any longer!

Why does this "leader" wear the face of the average down-trodden, abused, victims of deceit/scandal and favouritism that he has told to be "happy"?

Sorry buddy, the price of admission on the world's stage is "maturity".

It must be tough to wake-up everyday as the joke of the day!
