Investigators comb the Erawan Shrine for evidence on Aug. 18, the day after a bomb killed 20 people there, mostly tourists.

BANGKOK — An investigation will be launched into who leaked an police internal memo about Islamic State militants infiltrating Thailand, the chief of national police announced today.

In an apparent effort to dispel anxiety, Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda said police need to take action against the whistleblower behind the memo because it may cause panic. He also sought to play down the significance of the memo, which disseminated a Russian intelligence warning that 10 ISIS-related Syrian militants may be on the loose in Thailand.

“I’m afraid that people may panic, but in fact, it’s routine for us,” Chakthip said. “It’s usual for Syrians to travel here for tourism.”

"Im afraid that people may panic,".

No, they may panic because after knowing for 3 months the RTN dosent have a clue whether its correct or not and rather than spend time to find out, the RTN decides it is more important to find the whistleblower.

That could be hard because all they do is blow their own whistles.

Nevermind catching the terrorists, catch and punish the person who let the general public know the terrorists are in Thailand and as yet not captured.

Rumour has it that it was an ordinary deskclark, who got fed up with the inaction of his bosses, concerned about the wellbeing of the thai people.

You hit the nail directly on the head, as usual the rtp has got their priorities in order,

1. saving face / money,

2. money / saving face,

and everything else especially the safety and security of its citizens are way on down the list,

as far as the safety and security of expats and tourists are concerned it is a case of

" solly mitter but we are busy forming a committee to close the stable door and if you find our horse peas feed it for us as we need all our money for new train sets "

“It’s usual for Syrians to travel here for tourism.”

Shocking complacency. it is usual that amongst a large group of Syrians (Iraqi's, Uighers, etc.) that there will be some radicalised potential terrorists. The fact that they seem to have no idea of where the 20 remaining Syrians are, or what they may be doing doesn't concern?

The target this time is unlikely to be Thailand and Thais, but just as in Bali, there are plenty of soft targets with lax and corruptable law enforcement where concentrations of "enemy civilians" might be conveniently slaughtered. If it does happen, the collateral damage to Thailand as a tourist destination will be significant.

Not only that but this so-called government seems to have no idea about how to communicate with the Nation. Almost everything that comes out of the mouths of the spokespersons, including the PM, is ill considered, contradictory and often downright inflammatory.

I would guess ISIS has operatives wherever they want them. Likely that quite a few are citizens of the host country. No need to make them trek across 1000's of miles on the refugee trail. Just buy them a plane ticket to the airport of interest

"to take action against the whistleblower behind the memo "

whistleblower is somobody who reveals company/country wrongdoings.

so far the motive of a leak is unknown. It well might be hindering russian work against isis, so it can be a controlled leak, planned by the government.

the report was secret, even chief police in pattaya and phuket (towns named in the paper) only known about it from the mass media.

as too syrians - isis did capture immigration offices with blank passports, they use them to send operatives. People using them might be from any country in the world, including americans and europeans. It's pretty easy in thailand to switch to another passport, whether real or fake. Corrupt immigration officials are doing it for 20k baht, including stamping and putting on a computer system

So typical of Thailand. It is far more important to find out who leaked the memo than putting ALL efforts into finding the terrorists.

"...it’s routine for us..."

...and that is the danger, that it is treated routinely...zero sense of urgency.

"police need to take action against the whistleblower behind the memo because it may cause panic"

Another fine Thai example of "kill the messenger". Many countries in world sane enough to know that an involved and aware public is key asset in suppressing crime. Police alone not enough, especially here.

They say there are 400 Syrians in country now. So how do they manage to get a visa to come here?

With all thats going on in that area you would think that they would be a risky group to begin with. Either coming here with no intention of leaving or worse.

The international reports Russia security advised the Thai security that 10 ISIS agents had entered Thailand , did Thailand know this had happened at their boarder immigration , Russia also pointed the direction to which these ISIS agents went , two at a time to various tourist locations and the Memo leak came out of Thailand's spy agency, the RPT are in over their head on this one. .....................................coffee1.gif
