If you're going to Kuala Lumpur, I can wholeheartedly recommend two taxi drivers. They are:

Mohd Mokhtar 03-9171 6410 or 012-6558 174

Thomas Tan 013-3625158 or 03-92228590

Mohd is a retired police sergeant. When he gave us a ride from the Thai Embassy, he did a fine job of learning that we'd need a taxi to take us from the hotel back to the embassy and then to the airport the next morning, and assured us he'd be waiting when we checked out. Very personable, and a fair price.

The next morning, he called to tell me that he was sending his "brother," which meant very close friend, because he couldn't pick us up himself. Thomas Tan, the brother, was waiting for us before the appointed time, and in fact he's the hero of this little tale.

Thomas helped us through somewhat stressful run to the Thai Embassy, then off to the US Embassy because I needed more passport pages, then back to the Thai Embassy an hour later to get my new non-b visa stuck onto one of those pages, and then to the airport, on time.

If Thomas couldn't find a place to park, he'd just pull to the side of the road, pop the hood, and pretend he had car trouble. Near gun-toting embassy soldiers. An amazingly calm man. He'd also step into the street and stop traffic as if he were a cop. I think he was having fun. His humor helped me hang onto my sanity.

This is important. You can leave your luggage in his taxi and go spend half an hour inside an embassy, knowing he won't steal it.

(I was carrying thousands of baht worth of cat food, too. Big black market for that. :o )

Thomas is used to airport runs. He's a good driver, safe and alert always, law-abiding in the city, maybe a wee case of leadfoot on the freeway to the airport when his passengers are very close to running late. He knows his way around the city back roads where traffic actually moves, as does Mohd, and they don't play loop-the-loop games to run up the fare.

Finally, Thomas Tan didn't ask for extra money at the airport. Only what we'd agreed upon with Mohd in advance, and that didn't include a round trip to the US Embassy or about an hour in waiting time.

This is a guy who knew that we were pushed for time, and that we were leaving, and that this might a fine opportunity to screw us out of what we might think of as Monopoly money. I gave him double what we agreed upon and rushed away because, hey, it is Monopoly money, but that's just me.

In short, a friendly, helpful, honest, professionally run service. But I said that already, didn't I?
