roamer
I originally posted this in General Topics before being told the original story was running here...wasn't able to find it on a search, maybe the new site update etc. Anyway this is the story of the inquest held into the death in London. Interestingly, nothing said about drunkenness instead the weather and the poor lack of medical facilities being blamed for the death. Please bear in mind in my comments below I knew nothing of the original claims of drunkenness. A midwife from London died on the first day of a dream holiday in Thailand after falling from the back of a moving motorised rickshaw, known as a tuk-tuk, an inquest heard today. Happened in Phuket last year but I would think the comments regarding the lack of specialist equipment on board the ambulance and at the first receiving hospital would be pretty much the same anywhere in Thailand. I wonder how many tourists take into account that as far as the emergency services are concerned, the lack of training and equipment, that Thailand is still very much a third world country. http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/niamh-corrigan-midwife-killed-in-fall-from-tuktuk-on-first-day-of-dream-holiday-in-thailand-a3323736.html
autanic
Sad story really. Its nice to have a few drinks, but whatever the circumstances a young woman has died and that is really the sad bit. We can play what if, all we want, the facts are the facts.

The vehicle was on the flat and had been for some time as the incident happened outside the cemetery at the north end of Kamala. The Kamala ambulances are at most 10 minutes from the location (if not out on other calls). I doubt any ambulance crew in the world would have been able to do anything for someone landing on their head after falling from a vehicle at speed. Having been past the location the next day the road was still not a pretty site. Likewise any hospital would have been hard pressed to deal with such injuries, never mind the more basic facilities at Patong. She may even have died prior to reaching the hospital (yes I know a doctor has to officially make the call but an ambo crew will be aware if someone is still breathing), theerby the decison to take her to the nearest hospital, not more specialist care in Phuket town may have been the correct one. This is a brief synopsis of the coroner's inquest as reported by a newspaper and a lot of the detail is therefore missing. Accidents happen unfortunately. thai3
Not a tuk tuk and you don't have to be drunk to fall out of one, it's a song teaw. Almost fallen out of one as they brake and fallen back inside more than once, no belts and they would not be allowed to operate in a normal country. If only taxis (Cars) were allowed she would still be alive. I think you meant in advanced economies (Switzerland, Australia, Japan, HK, etc). Nothing to do with being civilized or not. Everything to do with the stage of economic development.
