PHUKET:-- Thailand will enjoy four days off from Thursday next week (December 31), with national holidays on New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, followed by the weekend.

Government offices apart from police stations across the island are preparing for a four-day shutdown as the nation bid farewell to 2015 on Thursday, December 31 and will celebrate the New Year on Friday, January 1, followed by the weekend.

Phuket Immigration Office, Land Transport Department, Employment Office and all main banks will be closed on these four days as well as the District office.

The post office will be open until noon on New Year's Eve but will be closed on New Year's Day and the weekend. Shopping malls will remain open as usual but with only some banks open for business.

Thailand is by far the hub of public holidays.

Must equal a month a year easily.

I would think those who work 6-7 days a week would welcome any days off. I used to live in Bali, and their holidays exceeded Thailand by a wide margin. Not only numerous Balinese Hindu days off, but also Muslim and Christian days off. Thought might be easier to post when offices opened rather than closed.

Thailand seems to also be going strong to adopt Christmas as well.

Kids have to bring gifts to school to exchange.

I honestly wish the Thai's would leave foreign holidays alone,

as they have enough holidays of their own,

and they have little to no idea what other foreigners holidays are about anyway,

yet they are happy to stick their hands out seeking gifts. rolleyes.gif

Then they should really consider adopting Chanukah.

Eight days, count 'em, EIGHT, of super exciting gifts like pencils and underwear.

Then there are the candles. Could easily do FIREWORKS instead.

Not to mention the Chinese food on Christmas. What's not to like?

What is it with this bloody junta and ever increasing 'public holidays'? It's almost as if they're aware the economy is in the doldrums and no hope of improvement any time soon so may as well not bother 'working', which is a 'given' among bloody bureaucrats anyway. Orrrrr, is it that the junta (or any elected government body come to that) are unable to operate without them so feel the need to 'keep them happy'? Whilst the rest of us suffer yet more delays? The 'well, they may increase domestic tourism' is a joke. Most simply stay home or visit relatives.
