Thai export volume continues to decline 11 consecutive months

BANGKOK, 29 December 2015 (NNT)-The Trade Policy and Strategy Office has revealed that Thailand’s export figure in November declined by 7.4%.

Trade Policy and Strategy Office Director General Somkiat Trirattanapan said the export volume in November, which was worth 17 billion US dollars, declined continuously for 11th consecutive month.

The total amount of export during the first 11 months of this year declined by 5.5% compared to the same period last year to 197 billion US dollars.

Mr. Somkiat claimed export slump was triggered mainly by slow global economy and declining global oil prices. Industrial and agricultural exports have also decreased by roughly the same at 7%, especially rubber and rice.

The decline in the global oil prices has affected oil related exports by as much as 10%. The overall export for this year will likely be close to negative 5% from rather than the previous forecast at negative 3%.

The Director General added later that even though the Thai exports have so far been experiencing contractions, the country has been able to maintain its market shares oversea. This also include a steady growth in the export of cars and auto parts for 5 consecutive months.

When the TPP comes on line and Thailand is left out of it, this particular sector might take a big hit.

Wow....

The country of wrong decision making and short sightiveness.

2015 on an average is up 10% in my Patong operation. This isn't saying much since 2014 - 2015 was focused on rebranding in the midst of local thai forces I had no control over.

Now with a home point the first quarter, traction started to grab. 2nd qtr., pick up hit. Now that I'm in 4th qtr., word to mouth and ratings are going Google. 8.4 is ok.

Isaan on the other hand is a blight. I'm not selling 1 kg of anything. My COG from Patong will absorb at tremendous discount. Its just tranpo, I got to figure out.

Thank god for vertical integration

It "might" have something to do with the people who really own and run the country taking out their baht. Then they can buy other currencies with a strong exchange rate when acquiring assets (like houses) and companies in less strife-torn countries around the world.

Unfortunately the rot has set in and the figures will certainly be worse next year. The government has a bad habit of always blaming others, outsiders for whatever goes wrong within the country, this government can never admit its making some very bad mistakes on its own.

Like others have already said the Baht is way over valued making Thai products unduly expensive compared to other countries. The government needs to make a lot of concessions if it wants Thailand to be economically prosperous once again.

Tourist figures may indeed be up but look at what is coming through the door these days, millions of non spending Chinese, so tourist revenues are not increasing at all. And as for the government's quality over quantity idea, I am afraid Thailand as an exotic holiday destination is well passed its sell by date. Rich, rich people avoid countries such as Thailand overrun by noisy Chinese, and its mafia runs places such as Samui, Phuket and horrible Pattaya, with Chiangmai also on that list.

So the future looks bleak indeed for Thailand because criminal activity is an expanding and very lucrative business for the various mafias. The end result, implosion.

and Thai Baht still strong idont understand why

We are around 36, coming from 28... Thats a decline of more than 20%...

The Thai baht did not decline the $ got stronger against all other currencies. It was not a weakening of the Thai baht.

Thailand still have a trade surplus.

Yes as long as it has a trade surplus the Baht will stay strong.

They are "talking" about joining. Fast forward 20 years and you can still hear them talking. They really hate to lift the sky high tarrifs on imported items. I just look at the juicy Australian steaks and my mouth waters. Cut off the nose to spite the face.

The decline is due to the way to strong Baht.

I agree. The economic numbers do no support it. A lower baht would help tourism and exports but for some reason they just hate to lower it along with other countries. I do not think it floats like my countries currency which is taking a kicking. When and if it does fall look out below it will be fast. 1997? There are so many things around the world being propped up lets hope the prop sticks do not break.

Yes and who is artificially holding it up and to what end?

Seems this nation can come to a standstill and the baht drops .05% (in before: not an accurate figure, just a figure of speech)

That's also what i think, one day the baht will fall really hard and continue to do so. Asian and S-American currency's have done that before.

Except rice, fish, fruit, cars i have no idea what Thailand exports.

Rice, fish, tourism allready have big problems.

Unfortunately a lot of rubbish has been floating in the sea since 1947.

With a Junta government and no elections for another year it will only get worse. Once the Asian Economic Community come in with the cheaper products and cheaper labor Thailand will be in very big trouble. People will become violent if the can not feed there families or face losing there land. Hope this government really cares about the people!
