Leaving through Nong Khai with unexpired ED visa to get tourist visa in Vientiane

Recommended Posts

I am currently in Thailand on a single-entry ED visa, which I would need to "reextend" at the immigration office in March. However, I am considering leaving the program and school that are sponsoring my visa. I would like to stay in Thailand for another three or for months, but would not want to attempt to do so on the technically invalid ED visa.

Thus, I have been considering leaving Thailand through Nong Khai in order to apply for a double-entry 60 day visa in Vientiane. Will I have issues leaving with the unexpired ED visa, or when applying for the tourist visa in Vientiane? If anyone has done something like this before, or has any better suggestions for how to do this, please let me know. Thank you.

  • Double entry tourist visas are no longer available.
  • You can get a single entry (SETV) which will give you a 60 day permit to stay on entry. That stay can be extended by 30 days for 1,900 baht at an immigration office.
  • At the end of the 60 days or 3 months (if you extend) you can go for a new SETV or exit enter using visa exempt entry which will give you 15 or 30 (G7 countries) day stay.

p.s. There are reports of the Nong Khai border requiring a cancellation letter from the school. I assume you're on an extension of stay so it would be a good idea to get a letter. If you're still on the original 90 day stay you can exit without a problem or letter.

There have been reports at Nong Khai where persons on certain Non-B visa's were asked to show a cancellation letter from their school before allowed to exit. Just to be safe...ask them to cut a letter cancelling your enrollment. Otherwise you may be sent to the Immigration office down the road and hope that your school staff will answer the phone and fax one over. Same for people on work extensions. Cancel before you attempt to cross.

Are you on extension of stay or original 90 day visa ?

Thank you very much for your responses. I am on an extension of stay. Due to the circumstances in which I would be leaving the school/program, I doubt I would be able to obtain the necessary cancellation letter. Would I be less likely to encounter this issue at a different border crossing, for example, Chiang Khong? Are there any border crossings into Laos that would most likely be more lenient about letting me out?

Nong Khai has not been asking for a cancellation letter for the last 7-8 months, I went through 6 months ago and was not asked, this has not changed since then

You are correct.

No reports of them wanting the cancellation letter for a long time now.
