MYANMAR -- Strong winds and large waves in the Andaman Sea sank two fishing vessels off Trang province and forced more than 300 boats to anchor at inland waterways Thursday.

It was the fifth consecutive day that waves of up to 4 metres in the Andaman Sea were reported.

The conditions were too dangerous for small boats to go out to open sea.

It was reported that some fishermen tried to fish in the morning when the sea was calmer. But they did not venture far out and returned to shore when the sea became too rough.

The Trang branch of the Marine Office warned small boats against going out to sea and suggested operators get weather updates via the Meteorological Department.

On Wednesday, the Third Naval Area Command rescued seven Myanmar crew members after their cargo ship the Aung Chat Sar sank. It had been travelling from Myanmar to Penang.

The ship sank on Tuesday evening around 100 nautical miles from Phuket.

The Navy rescued the crew members on Wednesday evening. There were no injuries.

The crew arrived at Phuket Thursday.
