PM rejects rubber farmers’ demand for price subsidy

0601016-wpcf_728x409.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The government will not intervene to shore up rubber prices as demanded by rubber farmers because it does not have the money to do so and it is against the government’s policy, said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha.

Instead, he said the government had instead helped improve the cost of living of rubber farmers and helped them on sustainable basis.

He asked rubber growers to understand that the price slump of rubber was due to global economic slowdown and global oil price cuts. He defended that the government had never abandoned rubber growers as widely misunderstood.

Rubber growers in 17 southern provinces planned to ask the government subsidise the price of rubber sheets at 60 baht per kilogramme and offload the 400,000 tonnes of rubber held in stockpiles.

They also complained about the government’s delay in providing compensation to them at 1,500 baht per rai up to a maximum of 15 rai per household.

The price of raw latex has dropped to 13 baht a kilo in this part of the woods. For many it's just not worth harvesting at all. What are the Government going to do when all those rubber farmers from the South where their power base lies, start getting restless. What will the reaction be if the yellow rubber farmers occupy Bangkok like the red rice farmers did in 2010?

Alas, they have all become too dependent on the populist strategies of the Thaksin era.

If any have implemented H.M. the King's idea of Por Pieng (self sufficiency) they'd be able to live off the proceeds easily. I have seen some planting fruit trees such as Durian and Pomelo in the rubber forests and keep fish in ponds, they easily survive. If people only plant one crop (the North mainly Lamyai, The South mainly rubber, the middle mainly rice) how can they imagine to survive if prices go down. Por Pieng is the way to go. Our visionary King has made this clear LONG AGO.

But then they wouldn't have new pick-ups to drive or the latest mobile phones to use. They would ,however, most probably be happier.Like it or not though ,Thailand as a country is evolving and embracing materialism.

Prayut is such a funny man.

As rubber farmers complain about the delay in his government subsidy of 1,500 baht per rai (owners receive 60% of the subsidy or Bt900 per rai, while workers receive the remaining 40% or Bt600 per rai), he says that it is against government policy for price sibsidies.

In fact Prayut has attempted to artifically shore up rubber prices trhoughout 2014 (Bt10 billion budget) and 2015, notably with above market prices in G2G sale of rubber to the Chinese Hainan company and in Prayut's Rubber Buffer Stock Program that operates on similar principles of Yingluck's pledge rice program. Obviously, the world market didn't pay attention.

The political support of the pro-royalist Southern rubber farmers is too important for the NCPO to ignore. Paryut will find a way to mollify their demands. Perhaps another large sale to Russian at above market prices, albeit a barter for more military weapons.

are those submarines still off the table?

Tanks, subs, planes and missiles ate up the budget. If the rubber farmers march on Bangkok they must be prepared.

Chaos. I can remember when I first arrived here the government was encouraging farmers to get into the rubber business incentives and all. Yes I was young and naive once and listened to the government tell me that I must save for my retirement which I did. Now I have money in the bank that makes me hardly any interest the stock market is a casino. I am to old and ill informed to play in that sand box. I paid faithfully into my pension and now get zero COLA while inflation is obviously 5 to 6% Yes I have listened to government lies all my life. Now you get better odds believing in the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. My advice to young people spend it today tomorrow it could be worth nothing. Take my "Golden" advice.

A great example of responsible government, right? Putting reasonable limits on the amount of support available is far more responsible than running up huge debts and stockpiles, and planning to borrow even larger amounts to allow unsustainable schemes continue without parliamentary oversight.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

So what your saying the goverment should support all rice farmers and rubber farmers at a fixed price for there goods, just like gold?

How about subsidising restaurants and gogo bars too, when there business is not good????

Or and subsidising gogo girls when they have a lean month, where does all the subsidisy's end?

Have you ever heard of growing different crops like in the uk and america and not put all your your eggs in one basket,

that way when the bottom falls out of rice, hey your growing fruit too, so who cares about the rice price, no over supply because there, & less rice available, increasing the rice price, when u have over supply diversify, its called using your brain

who is the imbecile you? i think so.........

i think you should ask the general to subsidise your brain so you downt wear out your one brain cell. yeah lets give another 10 billion dollars to the rice farmers LOL

how about spending that 10 billion on farming education, oversupply, and diversification, instead of repeating the same yearly mistakes
