Consumer products selling at normal price, says official

cp.jpg

BANGKOK, 15 January 2015 (NNT) – Recent inspections have revealed that consumer product prices have remained at the normal range, while authorities are set to conduct more frequent inspections during the Chinese New Year.

The Department of Internal Trade officials, led by the Deputy Director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) Pimchanok Vonkhorporn, have conducted inspections of consumer goods selling at Number One Market in Bangkok.

The TPSO deputy director has said most items are being sold at normal price, while the price of some items such as vegetables have slightly dropped. However, pricing of some items such as pork and chicken meat should be observed as it may slightly increase during the Chinese New Year festival.

In response, the Ministry of Commerce will be conducting more frequent pricing inspections at various markets during the Chinese New Year festivities. The general public can also report overpriced items to the Department of Internal Trade hotline 1569.

Not potatoes, onions, and other vegetables, thats for sure.

Garlic ( the big ones) , used to be 50 - 60 B/kg , now 80 - 90 B. ( I thought they come from China and the Yuan has dropped) Onions + 30 % , for a while now. Potatoes , always expersive , some vendors at the market want 50B/kg. Sure, fillers like rice & noodles are still the same price or cheaper.

Forget the markets go into Tops: One day hot food was 25 Baht per 100 grams..I went away for the weekend and it had jumped to 30 Baht. ( for the Western food side) I still can't figure out why the mashed potatoes are more expensive than the massaman curry or what the differences between the western buffalo wings and Thai version ;) And the fruit and veg...don't get me started (3 baht here 4 baht there) not a lot but when the base price is 10 - 20 you're talking 20 - 30% increases) My monthly bill at tops used to be 15 - 20 000...in 6 months its sitting closer to 25 now.

Also in Topsy many products are priced wrong or not at all.

Then you have to find the girl who has to weigh and price them but she is nowhere to be seen. Why not put a pricesticker on the avocado's?

Last week i bought 3 avocado's from 85 baht each and the girl made a price of 297. She said i had big avocado's while i took them from the small avocado-basket, big ones cost 99.

Same thing happened with the bagged avocado's, the price on the basket said 99 a kg and i had to pay 130. Worst thing was they were all rotten when i opened them at home so i couldn't finish my sushi rolls.

Local avocados are fine. 30 bt per kilo when in season.

The country has no inflation. No price changes. 300 baht daily has had no impact whatsoever. Pigs flying over victory monument...

Btw it cheaper doing a weekly shop in Aldi than a weekly shop in Thailand now.

Aldi is 50% cheaper then Topsy.

And in Foodland you have to check the expiry dates all the time, last week i got yoghurt which was expired on 1 januari. 8 days over.

So if everything is normal, why is it in the news?

Make an appearance for appearance sake. He could not even come within 5 bahts for a loaf of bread. Its a fairy tale appearance and all is well within the land.

Their misleading pricing pisses me off: Durian priced at 180 per kilo. Wow...what a steal. Grab a pack and go to checkout. 600 Baht. Da Fuq? Check underside of tray 450 per kilo. It's like they hope you won't notice a 300 Baht discrepancy in your 2000 - 3000 Baht bill. <deleted> !

Topsy also pisses me off regularly, 3 times allready i just walked away from the cashiers because i had to cool down. Left all my shoppings on the counter and just left.

Also those long qeueu's at the cashiers because they all have to mention their phonenumber to get 5% discount, then the cashier types it wrong and they have to do it again. Then they want to pay with creditcard and also that takes ages.

Also their fresh fish is priced wrong many times and if i show them what's wrong they don't give a butt.

Last time i paid at their bakery which goes much faster. But my chickenpackage was dripping chickjuice and that came on the counter and on the hands of the girl...mai ben lai.

Also i get annoyed from people with the coupons or folder in their hand to get discount. Takes ages so they save 10 baht and 10 customers have to wait for that in line.

Thai officials have already been thanked last week for monitoring the abnormal...

This one must be on over-time or he didn't get the memo yet...

Must really need a break if he has been monitoring the onions for the last 15 days gigglem.gif

For all those that moan about Tops, which is expensive for many things. I have not seen anywhere that it is mandatory to shop there or do you not have the option of Big C, Tesco Lotus, Makro, etc?

Potatoes are around 30-40bht/kg at Makro,

What do you think they should be selling for?

It seems many people just do one stop shopping. I have time so I buy meat where its better and vegetables at another place. Places like Tops and Villa for specialty items. As far as coupons go. Almost every time I go to Tesco I get a coupon on my reciept for 150b on my next order over 1000 b......Thats a great discount.

My wife bought cape gooseberries from the Royal farm shop in BKK...50 baht a box.

The same box from the same farm costs 89 in the supermarkets....whistling.gif

Tops isn't on the agenda. There will never be price checking at western shopping haunts. This is just a publicity stunt ahead of the influx of the beloved elite tourists of the far east, despite not spending very much, they'll get every bahts worth and cause a stinking fuss anyway.

Pointless exercise.
