Clinton receives endorsement from largest LGBT organization
By KEN THOMAS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign was endorsed Tuesday by the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization.

But the campaign of her main rival, Bernie Sanders, disputed the group's decision, pointing to the Vermont senator's record on gay rights.

The Human Rights Campaign announced its endorsement for the Democratic front-runner, which she is expected to accept at an event in Iowa next Sunday ahead of the state's leadoff Feb. 1 caucus.

The organization's board of directors, comprised of 32 community leaders nationwide, voted to endorse Clinton, the group said in a statement outlining plans to mobilize its 1.5 million members on her behalf.

"Too many LGBT Americans still face discrimination — in employment, in housing, in education, in health care — because of who they are or who they love," Clinton said in a statement Tuesday. "The stakes in this election couldn't be higher."

Clinton's views on gay marriage have evolved over time. She opposed gay marriage as first lady, New York senator and as a 2008 presidential candidate but backed it in 2013 after leaving the State Department. She has maintained strong political ties to members of the gay community, who point to her record on gay rights as secretary of state.

Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs said the Human Rights Campaign endorsement had to have been "based on something other than the facts and the record. No candidate for president has ever had a better record on gay rights than Bernie." He noted Sanders had voted against the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996 and supported by Hillary Clinton at the time.

Following the Supreme Court's ruling last year legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, many in the LGBT community have feared the decision could be reversed if a conservative president is elected.

"All the progress we have made as a nation on LGBT equality — and all the progress we have yet to make — is at stake in November," said Chad Griffin, president of Human Rights Campaign.

She would get all the freak votes,

I do not think, she will get all American votes. You are wrong.

It's hard to imagine the GLBT vote ( if there is such a thing) going to trump or crux . Maybe a few to Rubio on the basis of his looks.

This is about HRC vs. Bernie Sanders.

90 percent of GLBT voters vote for whichever democrat that is nominated.

Both HRC and Sanders would be excellent for GLBT civil rights issues.

It's a pragmatic choice to go with the almost definite winner of the democratic nomination -- HRC.

No, she's hasn't always been on board with GLBT civil rights issues, but she is now.

In the unlikely event that Sanders get the nomination, he will have no problem getting the overwhelming support of GLBT Americans against any republican, because all the potential republicans are anti GLBT civil rights to some degree or another. Of the front runners with them, Cruz is the worst.

This will do wonders for her, come the general election, if she makes it that far. All the conservatives in America will be real happy about this endorsement. clap2.gifcheesy.gifthumbsup.gifcoffee1.gif

Right wingers do use their anti-gay bigotry to fire up their base. Many thought that was over after marriage equality went national, but sadly, it isn't over at all.

Nope. Rubio is very anti-gay and his looks aren't anything special by the standards of gay men, which are often brutal.

Trump get gun toting Sarah Palin's endorsement...Hillary gets the gay and lesbian endorsement...

At a time when the world is at war...which endorsement would you prefer?

Yeah, so what?

That's politics.

Obama did the same turn and he's been the most consequential president for GLBT civil rights in history. More progress under Obama than all the other ones COMBINED.
