HAT YAI:-- More than 140 people, including 10 foreigners, were arrested and a huge haul of cash and other items were seized by police following raids at two illegal casinos in Hat Yai on Friday.

During the largest of the two raids, police, military and local authority officials, seized 11.3 million Baht in cash, two pistols, 100 deck of playing cards and a large amount of poker chips.

Nine men from Myanmar and a Malaysian man were arrested during the raid at a building in the grounds of the Golden Crown in central Hat Yai. 115 Thai people were also arrested.

All of the individuals were charged with offences related to gambling and taken to Hat Yai police station for processing.

In the second raid, 23 people were arrested at a smaller illegal casino located in the Khlong Hae area of the city. Officers seized gambling chips, cards and documents which showed the pawning of 40 motorcycles and 20 cars used in the gambling.

Police believe local influential figures are responsible for setting up and organising the casinos and continuing to investigate claims that other illegal casinos are operating in the area.

Sometimes I play cards with my Thai friends (big family) but only 1 or 5 Bath a game as it's just for fun. If only one person is lucky when we play then that person buys the protein for dinner the day after.

One time a another friend asked if I wanted to play "high stake rummy" as they where 1 man short so I ended up playing with people that are really what Thais call hi-so; a vise governor, a police colonel and my friend that has one of the largest farms in that province, we played for 20 Baht a game and whoever was +3-4 hundred Baht at the time was buying food and drinks, in the end I had bought a bottle of Whiskey, some food and still I had more in my pocket when we stopped playing than before we started.
I have also seen people (and police officers in uniform) playing 1000 Baht a round on this dice game High-Low and that's a little different...
