Wechat fail

I am having great difficulty downloading the Chinese Wechat program onto my Android smartphone (currently using Android Lollipop 5.0). Google play store is a no-go (I imagine owing to their ongoing dispute..) usually resulting in an incompatibility issue and if I do it via a 3rd party site, I manage to download it but then it fails to open. Please help

I used it a while ago without issue. Would likely have been a slightly older version.

I mostly suggest Chinese people I need to chat with to get LINE.
